Alfonso Alberto ChampionOctober 30, 1943 - November 2, 2022
Albert Champion entered the heavenly home of the Lord on Wednesday, November 2, 2022. He was born in Red Gate, Texas, and lived most of his life in Edinburg. He died in Marietta, Georgia, where he lived with his son and his family for seventeen years.
While attending Edinburg schools, Albert was selected as a member of the Edinburg Pony League All-Star Team in the Summer of 1958. The legendary team defeated the Monterrey All-Stars, who had won the All-Star National Championship the year before, sending them to the Regional Tournament.
Upon graduation from Edinburg High School, he attended Pan American University. Soon after, he served in the United States Air Force where he worked with top secret clearance in the intelligence field. He was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War and in the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station where he worked at NORAD in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon returning to Edinburg, Albert graduated in 1972 from Pan American University with a degree in Community Services and diligently worked in a variety of positions as a grant writer, developer, and implementation overseer of programs with social and education organizations that enabled him to serve people, cities, and communities in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Albert is survived by two children, Joseph Albert Champion (Amy Evelyn Crews), and Stephnie Reneé Champion (Carlos David Alfaro), their mother Rosalinda Alaniz Champion, and four grandchildren - David Alexander Champion, Charles Albert Champion, Samuel Joseph Champion and Mariella Alyssa Vasquez; and by his siblings - Tommie Champion Gonzales (Edinburg, Texas), Adelina Champion Gonzales (Austin, Texas), and Adan Champion (McAllen, Texas). He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso Alberto Champion, and Adelina Cerda Champion, and three sisters - Eva Champion (Edinburg, Texas), Diana Champion Chebuk (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and Yolanda Champion Liles (Austin, Texas).
Funeral Services for Albert will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 21, 2022, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Edinburg Texas. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
