It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Cheryl Ann McCoy, who left us on June 23, 2024, at the age of 75. Cheryl was born on October 14, 1948 – her life was a testament to love, dedication, and joy.
Cheryl, the daughter of Barbara Vance and Samuel McCoy, was deeply loved and guided by her grandmother Addie Vance. Cheryl was a beloved mother to her sons Daniku “Donny” Askia Dolly, Damian Jones, and DaVaun Edward Jones. Her grandchildren Da’Vine Alexine Jones, Amora Kiari Jones, Avianna Phoenix Jones, and Emir Ja’kobi Dolly were the lights of her life along with her two great-grandchildren DeMari and DeKari Sussman. Cheryl's brother, Gregory McCoy, also held a special place in her heart. Cheryl was a proud godmother to Lisa Amaker and had numerous non-biological “Sistas” such as cousin Carolyn “Toni” Vaugn and childhood friend Carolyn Haynie who were seriously like real Sistas to her. She leaves behind the Brumskill family from Richmond, VA and the Wilkins family from Philadelphia, PA.
Cheryl's professional journey took her to the New York Theological Seminary, where she worked as a skilled computer technician. Beyond her career, Cheryl was known for her love of beach getaways, especially her cherished trips to Jamaica. She was a woman of many passions, including listening to music and dancing, sewing her own clothes, and cooking delicious meals – talents that brought joy and comfort to those around her.
Though she passed in Baltimore, Cheryl was a true native New Yorker. She was born and raised in New York City, and the spirit of the city was in her soul. Cheryl had many amazing moments with her close friends and family throughout her NYC years. Growing up, she also enjoyed summers in Virginia with family and continued to seek solace in places like Jamaica as she grew older. One constant throughout her life was the relationships she maintained – whether formed in her hometown or in far-flung locales, the bonds established were often lasting and meaningful.
Cheryl's significant achievements were not just professional but deeply personal and familial. Both the Dolly and Jones families embraced Cheryl as their own. She nurtured strong bonds and treated her friends like family, and, in return, Cheryl was beloved within those families. Because of strong relationships, Cheryl's presence and reach was felt from Uptown and the Bronx to Jamaica, Queens, and beyond. From the staff of the New York Theological Seminary to families and friends in Syracuse, southern New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, throughout Virginia, Georgia, and on across to Negril, Jamaica – Cheryl’s extended family and friends meant the world to her.
Cheryl's legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will forever be remembered by those who knew her. She leaves behind a void that cannot be filled and a wealth of memories that will be cherished forever.

I Love You Grandma ❤️
Cheryl was always so sweet to me. A beautiful person inside and out. I am grateful for her life. May The Most High bless her soul.
Cheryl McCoy…my cousin, my sister, my friend. We shared so many memories. Every summer you would visit with Helen, Toni, and I in Virginia. We would sit up all night talking about boys of course…Lol. I miss you so much. I will miss our long conversations and the laughter we shared constantly. I will forever cherish all of the memories we shared. Although we were biologically cousins, you were ALWAYS my sister. I love you Cheryl!
Love Gloria ❤️
Rest in peace my dear cousin. You are truly missed.
With LOVE and strength in transition
