James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edith Barrett, and his parents, James Barrett and Mattie Hubbard. He is survived by his daughters, Zina L. Barrett of Newnan, GA, and Jurena Barrett of Forest Park, GA. His memory will be cherished by his grandsons, Arthur J. Barrett of Rome, GA, Isaac T. Barrett, and Izaiah T. Barrett of Newnan, GA. James was also blessed with a great-granddaughter, Athena Rein Kirkland-Barrett, and a great-grandson, Matias James Kirkland-Barrett, both of Newnan, GA. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mattie Ransby, Mildred Ransby, and Marie Ransby; brothers-in-law, James Isom and Roy Ransby; daughter-in-law, Natalie Alix Barrett; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly. James was an alumnus of East Technical High School, graduating on June 12, 1952, and briefly attended Kent State University from 1952-1953. His commitment to his country was evident in his service as an Army PFC Asst. Plt. Sgt. James's professional life was equally notable; he worked for Blue Cross as the Director of Government Affairs and was instrumental in authoring a bill that was successfully passed into law. His passion for public service led him to be elected as a city commissioner in East Cleveland in the 1970s, where he worked for the betterment of his community. An avid bowler, James enjoyed participating in weekly bowling leagues and tournaments. His love for the outdoors was apparent in his fishing trips, which he often enjoyed with his late wife, Edith. A world traveler, James had visited three countries outside the USA, embracing the joys of exploration and new experiences. James's dedication to his community extended to his involvement with the Over-The-Hill Track Club, where he volunteered and shared his love for athletics. A visitation with the family will be held in the chapel of Southern Cremations and Funerals, 431 SW Broad Street, Fairburn, GA, on December 22, 2025, at 11:00am. A funeral service will begin promptly at 12:00pm, with interment in Holly Hill Memorial Park to follow after. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. His spirit and love shall continue to live on through the lives of those he leaves to cherish his memories.
