May 9, 1924 ~ October 25, 2024

Cowan, James R. (Jimmy) passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the age of 100. Jimmy was born on May 9, 1924, in Newton County Georgia. He is predeceased by his loving wife Carol L. Cowan and beloved son James J. Cowan. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Myron Withka, his grandsons Alexander and Matthew Withka, his granddaughter Tessa Cowan and daughter-in-law Brenda Cowan as well as his many nieces and nephews. Jimmy was a US Army Air Corps Veteran who served in World War II. He was a US Air Force Veteran who also served during the Korean War. After serving in the military Jimmy attended Georgia State University and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Jimmy worked in the engineering field his entire career and retired as Senior Vice President of Sales and Engineering from Reliance Electric Company. After retirement Jimmy loved to tinker in his shed. He would repair old lawn mowers, leaf blowers and bicycles. All the kids in the neighborhood knew that Mr. Jimmy would fix their bikes with a smile on his face or even offer up one of the refurbished bikes to a child in need. Jimmy loved to reminisce about growing up in the country on the family farm. He loved talking about airplanes with anyone who would listen. Most of all he loved his family and his Lord. Visitation will be held at Southern Cremations and Funerals on Saturday, November 2nd, from 3:00-3:30. A celebration of life will follow at 3:30.

  1. Our sincere condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  2. Kimberly, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  3. As his daughter in-law to Jim and Carol Cowan, one of my favorite memories of this wonderful man who was like a father to me was a time when I was with Jim and Carol on a Navy Reserve drill weekend. I was welcomed in their home and we would go out for meals after my completed days at the Naval station where I drilled. My sweet father in-law would tease me about my love of coffee and once told our waitress I was like a grumpy bear when I didn’t get my coffee!!! I ordered coffee to drink with my meal that time. I will always cherish the precious relationship I had with both my father and mother-in- law. Brenda Cowan
