James Edgar Southern

January 24, 1946 ~ December 14, 2022

James “Jim” Edgar Southern, 76, of Dallas, Georgia succumbed to cancer in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his friends and family on December 14, 2022. James is survived by his wife Cindy (Grubbs) Southern of 37 years, sons James (Vance) of Jacksonville, FL and James (David) Southern of Dallas, GA, daughter Sabrina Diane Adkins of Palatka, FL, brothers Johnny and Richard Southern, sisters Anne and Linda, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family. James had the rugged masculinity of a bygone era akin to his hero, John Wayne, and rarely allowed feelings to be openly expressed. And much like the “Duke”, he carried himself in a manner that suggested to everyone in his path that he wasn’t looking for trouble but would just as soon throw a bottle at your head as not. For those who were lucky enough to really know James, the unblinking squint of his deep blue eyes behind his boyish grin, the firmness in his voice, and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor will be forever etched in our collective memories. James was a pillar of strength and security for all his family and friends, and he will be dearly missed. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Sunday, December 18 at the Columbarium Chapel at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park with a service of remembrance immediately following from12:00 - 1:00 PM. James will be laid to rest at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park next to his Mother Edith (Taylor) Southern and his Father Virgil Edgar Southern.

  15. Q: How did you meet James?

A: Jim was a close friend to my father for many years. We all came to know and love Jim and the family. He was a gracious and kind man who helped me out as a young lawyer. We had many great adventures on the water (which was unusual because he didn’t like to be IN the water much) that I will always remember fondly. Jim will be terribly missed but I look forward to seeing him on the other side someday! Lots of love to Cindy and the family.

  16. Fly Hi, Big Buddy !!

  17. Q: How did you meet James?

A: Ed and I met Jim and Cindy at Church in Dallas, GA many years ago. He was such a fun person and friend. Mine and Ed’s fondest memory was the time the guys dressed up like women and danced and lip synced to “Man I Feel Like A Woman” at the Church Fall Festival 😆❤️ it was so much fun and we all laughed til we cried!

  18. This Dianne along time friend of Jim and lost touch with him and was unaware of his passing my sincere condolences to his family
