Kppy Mason
Big John. He was known by our entire family by that name. My Big Brother. As a little boy, I always tagged along with him. We grew up in Cedartown. GA. Our Dad owned a cafe on main street and we would go to the movie theater across the street. The Cedar Theater. Johnnie and I were the dish washers when we were growing up and we often spent our time off going to the movies. In those days, the mid to late 40’s, gangster movies were popular. I remember, as if yesterday, a movie , which featured Al Capone is the key person in the movie. His fellow gang members called him, Big Al. As little guys we would often react the movies which we saw. Long story…our Dad heard our enacting the movie over and over. He called out to Johnnie while we toiled over the dish washing chores…..”OK, Big John, you and your little brother, Slippy get to work!”. The name stuck for the rest of his life. In high school he was “Big John” to all his class mates. In his tour while in the Navy, he was “Big John”. Even at work, “Big John” was his name. Both my Mom and Dad called him Big John most of his life. To me, he will always be “Big John” , “Slippy’s” Big brother. I will miss him.
I have so many happy memories of Johnnie from high school?
He will be missed by his loving family and friends.
Love you Kip.
