Juanita Madeline Johnson, passed away peacefully at Laurel Lodge Assisted Living in Cleveland, Georgia, Sunday morning, October 13, 2024. She was 91 at the time. The entire family is at peace with her passing due to her declining health over the past several weeks.
Known to all as Madeline, she was born in Hackneyville, Alabama at the family home on June 25, 1933, to Evie Lee and Price Walls. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd Johnson; her brother, Tifton Walls; and stepson, Gene Johnson. She worked with her siblings on the family farm until she graduated from the Hackneyville High School. Looking to advance her life she moved to Atlanta at the age of 17 to live in a boarding house and seek a career. A cousin working at Lockheed Aircraft helped her obtain a position. She was employed in the Finance Department where she worked until retirement at the age of 58 gaining the position of Supervisor. Along the way she met her husband, Lloyd, who also worked at Lockheed as a machinist.
After retirement Madeline traveled extensively from New Zealand to China, to Europe and even an African safari. One of her favorite trips was with her sisters and Senior Pastor Dr. Ike Reighard of Piedmont Church to the Holy Land. Madeline was a founding member of Piedmont Church and told the story of meeting in the early days in a little white house. She loved her church and church family at Piedmont, especially her Sunday school class and held many offices within the church including leading the youth department. Madeline and Lloyd lived in the same home in Marrietta from 1958 until she moved to Cleveland, Georgia to be near Lynne, her daughter and Lynne’s husband Andy three years ago.
Madeline is survived by her daughter and son in law, Lynne and Andy Gilbert; her siblings known as ‘the sisters’, Billie Tatum, Barbara Sanders (Ted), Linda Tucker and Jonnie Copeland (Buddy); stepson Lee Johnson; step-daughter-in-law Gilda Johnson; and a multitude of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and loving friends.
Senior Pastor Dr. Ike Reighard will preside over graveside services on Wednesday, October 16th at 2:00pm EDT at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, 1861 Dallas Highway, Marietta, Ga 30064. (770 919-7100). The service at 2 pm eastern will be followed by a reception and light lunch at the cemetery reception hall. Madeline’s family has lived in the Hackneyville, Alabama area since the late 1700’s and generations of the family are buried in the community cemetery there. It is maintained by volunteers and relies on donations for upkeep. In lieu of flowers please make donations by check made out to Hackneyville Cemetery Fund.
