Larry Lee Johnston

September 24, 1940 ~ July 8, 2025

Larry Lee Johnston September 24, 1940 – July 8, 2025 KENNESAW, GA Mr. Larry Johnston, age 84, passed away Tuesday evening at Wellstar Hospice Care at Kennesaw Mountain. A memorial service will be held at New Salem Baptist Church, 836 New Salem Rd., Kennesaw, GA, 30152, on Saturday, July 19 at 11 AM. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 PM at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park. Larry was born in Rome, GA, the son of the late Thandy H Johnston and the late Mozelle W Johnston. He graduated from Berry Academy and Berry College, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1964. Larry was an avid sports fan and Jeopardy was must see TV. He was a talented wood worker - from furniture making to building the house he called home for 50 years. There wasn’t a book he wouldn’t read or a veteran he wouldn’t talk to about WWII. But his true passion was music. A song was never far from Larry's lips, whether it be while working in the wood shop, riding in the car with or without the radio, family gatherings, the church choir, or with groups of friends. Larry worked for the FBI, Georgia Federal, and retired from the US Postal Service. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Waits Johnston, sons, Kirk Johnston(Denise) of Lancaster, SC; Keith Johnston(Jen) of Mableton, GA; and daughter Kari Arnold(Bruce) of Kennesaw, GA; 4 grandchildren, Joshua(Darcy) of San Francisco, CA; Matthew(Amelia) of Charleston, SC; Brittany Jackson of Kennesaw; and Katie Ash(Keith) of Kennesaw; and 4 great grandchildren Bohannon and Carolina Ash of Kennesaw, GA, and Hampton Johnston of Charleston, SC and Theo Johnston of San Francisco, CA. He is survived by his sister, Jocelyn Johnston Espy of Americus, GA and was preceded in death by his brother Stanley Johnston. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ross Magoulas Music Scholarship Fund at Berry College. https://berry.givingfuel.com/gift

Guestbook

  1. I consider it both a blessing and an honor to have known Larry. I will miss his quick wit, great sense of humor, and his vast amount of knowledge. He was a fantastic storyteller and I enjoyed listening to him recounting events from his past experiences. While I am deeply saddened by his passing, I am grateful to have known him and will hold dear the memories I have of him.
    Sincerely,
    Steve Atwell
