Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Lula Mae Strickland was born Lula Mae Stafford in
Sampit, South Carolina on January 4, 1953. She was raised in New York
City by her parents Sue and Nicholas in Jamaica, Queens. She attended
Richmond Hill High School and graduated with honors from the College
of New Rochelle in Upstate New York. She made Brooklyn, New York
her home for over 30 years and Atlanta, Georgia in recent years.
Lula was a big personality who did not sit on the sidelines
waiting for life to happen; she made things happen and lived life to the
fullest. Lula was a fantastic mom (and grandmom), writer, friend,
activist and woman. She is an accomplished journalist, with extensive
published works ranging from magazines such as Essence and Black
Enterprise to widely circulated newspapers such as The Amsterdam
News, Caribbean Life, New York Post and many online and print
publications. She is featured in the critically acclaimed book Go Girl!
The Black Woman’s Book of Travel and Adventure. She was a strong
supporter of Pan Africanism, bridging the gap between all cultures of
the diaspora. She was an avid traveler, working with the South
American Tourism board for many years, traveling extensively to Brazil,
Mexico, the Caribbean and South Africa. She was also a dedicated
worker of the NYC Human Resources Administration. Of the many
accomplishments Lula achieved in her life, one of the greatest was her
grandson Noah, whom she adored. She was saved, peaceful, strong, and
beautiful. Lula left a mark in this world that will never be erased. She
was truly loved by many.
She is survived by her children Khalid and Jazz, grandson Noah,
daughter-in-law Sachiko, son-in-law Paul, mother Vernell, sister Carol,
brothers Tommy and Charles Jr., stepson Mandla, treasured friends
Aisha, Ivana and Esther, her wonderful uncles; many nieces, nephews,
and cousins whom she loved dearly in South Carolina and Boston and
the many good friends whom she loved as family.

Paul and I have wonderful memories of Lula. She and I got to tour the MlK Memorial site, as well as the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. I enjoyed it so much ; I think she did as well. When she celebrated Jazz’s academic achievement, the surprise guest was a lifelike image of Pres. Obama; we took pictures with it. What fun that was !
