Biography Maria Rosetta Foye-Shillingford was born on the 19th day of October 1946 in Coulibistrie, Dominica. She was the §th of 7 children born to Clive and Stephanie Foye. She was married to Paul Shillingford who preceded her in death 26 years ago. Mrs. Shillingford was a loyal, efficient, hard-working and dedicated staff member at Maynard's Insurance Agency and Nagico Insurances for 19 ½ and 12 years respectively; working as an insurance agent for 32 years in St. Maarten, a place she called home for just under 49 years. She was thankfully able to enjoy retirement for the past 17 ½ years. Mrs. Shillingford was affectionately called Momsy by her children, grandchildren and great grandson. Friends and relatives also called her Mai, Tanty Maria, Ma Paul or Miss Shillingford. All these nicknames were forms of endearment which demonstrated the loving person she was. Momsy was soft-spoken and had a calm demeanor, qualities that caught her husband's attention and started the courting process. She never liked disunity and steered clear from anything aiming in that direction. She also raised her children to do likewise, to avoid disunity and be peaceable. She was also very humble and hospitable, something many can attest to having had the privilege to experience first-hand. That usually was accompanied by her many tasty meals. Momsy believed in helping others if it was within her power to do so, and that she did without hesitation. In fact, she gave birth to one but was a mother to many so much so that she raised many children as her own (who all called her mammy) and have had many live with her to help them 'get on their feet'. Momsy took it on herself to feed others on Sundays. Not only did she provide and cook the food, but she also packed and delivered them personally. She lived a simple but content life, ensuring that her children had or experienced things she never did; yet always expressing her heartfelt appreciation whenever they returned the favor. Most importantly, Momsy had immense faith in God. While courageously facing her medical battles, she never said 'why me', but rather, 'if not me it's someone else'. She believed in prayer and even prayed for her children to be strengthened to handle what was to come... 2 nights prior to her falling asleep in death. What an amazing and strong attitude! She fought until the end, but she accepted and was at peace with her fate. She believed and trusted that God has the power to resurrect those who have fallen asleep in death, a comforting hope that will become a reality. Soon, we will see our loving Momsy again in perfect health! In the interim, let us reflect on the wonderful memories of the calm, loving, kind, generous, hospitable, strong and peaceable woman we have all loved...Momsy... Maria Rosetta Foye-Shillingford.

  1. Look at them!! So happy they got to spend the day together in July 2024. They both really enjoyed seeing each other. I know my mother will miss Cousin Maria dearly and will cherish the time they always made to catch up with phone calls. Rest peacefully cousin.

  2. I vacationed in St Marteen in early 2000 with several friends. I (by myself) wanted to spend a few hours visiting cousin Maria but she insisted that the whole crew of 6 stop by. In no time, she had a huge, mouthwatering spread on the table for us all. That’s the loving, giving heart of cousin Maria. Rest peacefully cousin

  6. Amanda Sampson-Braithwaite says:

I heard the name Momsy  many times before I actually met her since she was the mother of my uncle’s wife. We finally met in 2007. At the time, my brother and I needed a place to stay while we did some shopping in St. Maarten. I remembered auntie Liz’s mum lived there, so we reached out to her asking if her mum could accommodate us for the weekend. In no time, auntie Liz responded that Momsy was happy to have us. We had wonderful time with her and she was a generous host. She took her time showing us all the shopping centers where we could get good deals which was a great help as it was our first time on the island. She really took care of us and made us feel comfortable during our stay.  The years passing, we continued to enjoy a warm relationship with Momsy. We especially looked forward to the times we had our virtual family worship and she would give such meaningful  comments. She was certainly a God fearing woman. I am so thankful for the time we spent together when she came to Antigua in 2023 for my wedding. We had so much fun the night before executing our many last minute plans. Momsy was the skilled cake cutter, cutting miniature cakes for the cake boxes to precision. Fond memories I will treasure forever. We are confident that Momsy is in Jehovah’s memory and that during that grand resurrection day, he will call and she will answer. What a wonderful time that would be when she is reunited with all her loved ones.

From the George and Braithwaite family – We express our sincerest condolences to the Roberts and all other family members and friends of Mrs. Maria “Momsy” Shillingford.

  8. Dear family,
Our deepest condolences to you all for the loss of your beloved Ms. Maria Rosetta Foye-Shillingford.
We pray that the God of all comfort will be close to you in your time of sorrow. He has provided us with a wonderful promise by means of the ransom sacrifice of Christ in order to give us a hope of seeing our loved ones again in the resurrection.
    Agape love,

  9. I remember as a child looking forward to summer school holidays, so my Dad can come get me to spend the whole month with him, Momsy and my 2 siblings “Glenda and Elizabeth”. One of my favorite memories was when Momsy took Elizabeth and myself to work with her at the agency…she would give us a pile of letters and have us place them in envelopes. I would pretend to be an adult working in my office. Then later in the afternoon Momsy would take us grocery shopping.
My first time traveling was with Momsy. She took me to Dominica with her and Elizabeth.
I remember how at the airport everyone knew Momsy calling her “Mrs. Shillingford” and welcoming her back. I was a child and was amazed how everyone loved and respected her. Everywhere we went people knew her. She was very caring and generous and people appreciated her.
Momsy rest peacefully. You will always be remembered and loved and one day be reunited with your love ones.

  10. Cousin Rosybil (Rose)

Marie, a caring kind and loving person who loved her family. A very spiritual and prayerful lady. Her home in St. Maarten was an open door to all. Her daily prayers were to see her grandchildren grow up.
I will always cherish the week we spent together last July in St Maarten, as we remenised about our childhood days and the family jokes.
I will always miss you dearest cousin.
    Elizabeth/Hezron, Glenda/Derick & Diane stay strong.

  11. My sincerest condolences to the entire family circle. May her soul continue to rest in eternal peace.

  12. Momsy I will miss you dearly. The last few months by your side our relationship rekindled to a tighter bond as a mother & daughter, hearing about your child hood stories & talking about other things brought us joy, despite pain you were going through. Thank you for the great advice & your kind gesture.
I look forward to seeing you in paradise where there will be no more pain or sorrow.
