Marlene Wilson, born on August 17, 1941, in Richmond, Virginia. She was the only child of her devoted mother, Alice Washington, who raised her with unwavering care. As a young girl, Marlene found joy and adventure in books, a passion that stayed with her throughout her life.
In her teenage years, Marlene and her mother moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she later met the love of her life, a former Marine Johnnie Wilson The two married in June 1960 and built a beautiful life together. In 1967, they welcomed their first child, a son Sherman Wilson. Though doctors told her she would never again carry a child, Marlene held firmly to her faith and hope. Four years later, her prayers were answered with the birth of her daughter, Serena.
Marlene dedicated herself to raising her children, pouring her creativity and skill into their lives. A gifted seamstress, she lovingly made their clothing, curtains, and bedding, creating a warm and nurturing home. Protective and attentive, she raised her children with strength and intention in the heart of Brooklyn.
At just 43 years old, Marlene faced the heartbreaking loss of her husband to a brain aneurysm. This tragedy left her being a single mother to her 12‑ and 16‑year‑old children. Refusing to be defeated by hardship, she returned to school and earned her Bachelor’s degree at Medgar Evers College in Business Administration with a minor in Psychology.
Marlene went on to build a successful career, first as a Buyer at A&S (Abraham & Strauss), then as a Senior Buyer at Frederick Atkins. Ultimately, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a New York Public School teacher—a role that allowed her to share her love of learning and reading with countless students.
Marlene leaves behind her daughter, Serena Martin; her son, Sherman Wilson; her beloved son‑in‑love Dexter Martin; and her cherished grandchildren: Nyjay Martin, Nigel Martin, Kennedy Wilson, and Dylan Wilson and her dearest friend of 77 years, Arlene Tupe.
Marlene’s life was defined by resilience, and an unshakeable devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on in the love she gave, the lessons she taught, and the strength she embodied.
"Think not of death as doom but the stepping over to the bigger brighter room". --Marlene Wilson
