Mattie Burnette Finney, affectionately known as “Sue”, was the oldest of three children born to Lewis and Euria Lee Burnette Sr. on January 15th, 1949 in Jeffersonville, Georgia.
On September 3rd, 2021, this good and faithful servant was called home to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; brother Larry Burnette; sister-in -law Diana E. Burnette Jr.; niece Crystal B. Burnette; and husband Melvin B. Finney. From that union was born her only child Omega Finney. Omega and Mattie shared a loving, inseparable bond. Mattie gave her life to Christ at an early age at Higgsville Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, Georgia.
Her strong faith and love of Christ guided her throughout her life. Early on, Mattie worked a variety of jobs in order to care for her and her family. She was always kind and compassionate. Mattie’s nurturing spirit pushed her to a career where compassion was essential. She attended Jeffersonville High School and Gordon College graduating with a degree in Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, Mattie was dedicated to her career, intelligent, loved working with geriatric patients, loved learning, and caring for others. Along the way she poured her strong work ethic into her daughter and taught her the importance of compassion.
Her beloved daughter would also become a nurse. Mattie retired from Nursing after 40 gratifying years. In her retirement she enjoyed spending time and caring for her granddaughter Gabrielle (Gabby), cooking, spending time with family and friends, serving as a Greeter and with the Health Ministry at Shiloh Baptist Church. Her infectious laugh and sunny disposition brightened any room.
Those mourning her passing, yet rejoicing having shared her life includes her daughter Omega R. Finney; granddaughter Gabrielle Stevens (Gabby); brothers Lewis Burnette Jr and Benjamin Odoms; sister Bernice Smith; niece Wenona FeFe Harris; and a host of cousins and friends.
