Deloris was born in Verbena, Alabama to Reverend James B. Lykes Jr and Mattie B. Lacey Lykes. She was the oldest daughter of eight siblings. She attended elementary and middle school in Verbena, Alabama, and high school at the Chilton County Training School in Clanton, Alabama. She was a member of the Beta Club and played on the volleyball team. She served her community as an active choir and usher board member at St. Paul A.M.E. church in Marbury, Alabama. She was an annual youth delegate to the A.M.E. church's yearly conferences and conventions. During her college years, she attended Massey Draughon Business School in Birmingham, Alabama, and completed an associate's degree in business administration and certification in stenography. She met and married Robert Clark, moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and was an amazing mother to two sons (Hosea and Lorenzo). As a devoted wife and mother, she continued her education and became a certified medical assistant working at Charity and Methodist Hospitals specializing in caring for women in the Labor and Delivery units and often floated to the newborn nursery. After many years working in the hospital setting, she was recruited by Dr. Davis to work in his private practice as a back office administrative/medical assistant performing clinical care of patients, assisting the doctor with procedures, setting patient appointments, calling to check on patients, and training other staff members. She served the community of New Orleans East as an expert seamstress making baby clothes, children’s clothes, prom dresses, and even a few wedding dresses. She was supposed to sell them but, on many occasions, she gave them to her customers. She had a generous heart. She also learned to crochet and gave several blankets to family members and friends. She and her family attended St. Luke A.M.E. church and often was able to fellowship with her 3 other siblings (James, Mary, and Joshua) and their families who attended the same church
Deloris loved life and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends from New Orleans, Alabama, Massachusetts, and Georgia. She coordinated several of our family reunions working tirelessly assuring everyone had a great time and plenty of food to eat. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, wearing beautiful clothing, getting her hair and nails done, and wearing red or purple lipstick completing her looks with fashionable eyeglasses. Her favorite music was gospel, her favorite movies (anything Tyler Perry), favorite television shows were The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Judge Mathis. Her hobbies included creating photo collages to give to family members and displaying the others on her walls, putting together puzzles, and completing word search puzzles. Her community service in Georgia began with her donation of clothes, medical supplies, and finances to the people in Haiti, making meals packages and personally driving around in Atlanta and the surrounding areas distributing them to the homeless or less fortunate. She attended charity events with her sisters (Mary and Josephine) donated to several charitable organizations in the Atlanta area and was an active participant in the annual United Way Shoe Box project stuffing shoe boxes with toiletries, socks, nonperishable supplies, and gift cards to be distributed to the homeless. She was a member of Red Oak United Methodist church in Stockbridge, Georgia serving on the usher board. Although she was retired, she worked part-time as a Home Health caregiver even during her last few weeks of life. She was a phenomenal woman always putting others before herself. She will truly be missed.
She leaves to mourn two sons, Lorenzo Clark, and Hosea Clark (Crystal); stepson, Robert Clark Jr. (Sharon); four siblings, James B. Lykes III(Pamela), Mary Hines, Jeremiah Lykes (Cassandra), and Josephine Lykes Kitt. She loved dearly her grandchildren (Kadaris, Taelor, Jalen, Paris), great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews, cousins, many friends and co-workers.
