Ms. Ina Doreen Benjamin, age 95, a resident of Conyers, Georgia and a native of Enmore Guyana, South America, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Piedmont Rockdale Hospital.
A Celebratory Service honoring her life will take place on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Southern Cremations & Funerals at East Lawn Memorial Park, located at 640 McGarity Road, McDonough, Georgia 30252.
Burial will take Place on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Saint Mark's Parish Church Cemetery, located Q258+WPJ, Enmore North, Enmore East Coast, Guyana, with the staff of Sandy's Funeral Home Directing.
Ina Doreen Benjamin, daughter of Edwin Theophilos Maloney and Maude Sarah Rebecca Sumner, was the only survivor of four children Mary, Eleine and Claris.Ina was born at Paradise Village, on the East Coast of Demerara, Guyana, South America on June 8, 1928. She attended Paradise Government School until she became an adult. She passed the school leaving exams but did not have an opportunity to further her education academically since her father refused to send her to schools far away from home. She pursued sewing and cake decorating and became an expert in that area throughout her life. Today she left a legacy to her children in baking cakes. She never forgot birthdays, or anniversaries, and would always send a card and a cake for special occasions. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and was always eager to care for them.
Ina was married to Edgar Mortimer Benjamin of Plaisance on the East Coast of Demerara on September 13, 1950, at the Moravian Church of Georgetown. He was the love of her life for 56 great years, before he passed away in 2006. They had a total of fourteen beautiful and dutiful children, Charles Stephen Benjamin, Sr; Pearlene Spellen, Avril Hope, Desiree Alexander, Claudette French, George Benjamin, Gwenneth Clarke, Doreen Woodfine, Lennox Benjamin, Paulette Best, Donald Benjamin,Robert Benjamin. Patrick Benjamin (deceased) and Glennis Benjamin (deceased). She leaves to mourn several grandchildren, Dr. Omotola Hope, Deon Alexander, Shawn Spellen, Rhonda Benjamin, Akila Benjamin, Troy Benjamin, Charles Stephen Benjamin, Jr; George Benjamin, Jr. Shawnette Adonis, Haun French, Curtis Benjamin, Kamille Best-Reily, Tawana Benjamin, Sade Benjamin and 29 other grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother-in law of Doris Benjamin, Dr. Wilbert Hope, Frederick (Junior) Alexander, Vibert French, Danita Benjamin, Charles Clarke, Patricia Benjamin, Clifford Woodfine, Shenell Benjamin, Richard Best (deceased) and Kimberly Benjamin.
She was the Sister-in-law of Doreen Joseph, Lynette Ferdinand, Yvette Phillips, Joseph, Vernan, Nathan and Ruben Benjamin.Ina was a fun, loving, joyful and caring person. She loved singing and dancing. She was well known and highly respected in the community. Everyone knew her as “Cousin Ina” everywhere she went.
She loved life and enjoyed traveling. She travelled to several countries, including, Paris, London, Israel, Africa, Greece, Barbados, Bermuda and many more. She made her final trip to see the Panama Canal at the age of 81 on a cruise.She loved the Lord and always encouraged her children to have faith in God. Ina was confirmed at Enmore Anglican Church where she attended all of her life until she migrated to the United States, in March 1979.She worked as a nursing assistant, taking care of the elderly, until she retired. In her final years, she relocated to Georgia, where she continued to enjoy her family and friends.
