Roy William Ewing

January 1, 1927 ~ August 7, 2024

Roy William Ewing, affectionately known as "Pappy," peacefully passed away at 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at the age of 97. Born on January 1, 1927, in Evansville, Indiana, Roy lived a life marked by service, love, and dedication. Roy served his country as a Seaman First Class Torpedoman in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He was honored by Harry Truman for his bravery with the American Area Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. After his military service, Roy pursued a fulfilling career as a Passenger Service Agent with Eastern Airlines, indulging his passion for travel and exploring the world. At the age of 71, Roy found and married the love of his life, Lillie. This union brought him joy and a new family that included two sons, Clark and Scott, and a daughter, Mary Beth, along with their families. Roy cherished his role as “Pappy” to his granddaughters, Hannah and Megan, and his grandsons, Clark, Carl, and Cole, and took great pride in his growing family. Roy was a man of few words but loved fiercely. He was an active member of the church choir at First Christian Church of Tyrone, enjoyed following horse racing, especially The Kentucky Derby, and stayed engaged with current events and home-cooked meals. His dignified presence and deep love will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him. Roy is survived by his loving wife, Lillie Ewing of Tyrone, GA; daughter Mary Beth Grabhorn (Peachtree City, GA); granddaughters Hannah and Megan Grabhorn; son Clark M. Wright and wife Mindy (Asheville, NC), and their children Clark (wife Lynsey and child Clark), Carl (wife Amber and children Abram, Ada, Auden), and Cole; son E. Scott Wright and partner Jen Hepokoski (Ft. Myers, FL); sister Rosemary Ewing; sister-in-law Kathy Ewing; and nephews Tim Ewing and Greg Ewing. Lillie and the family wish to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support received from friends and family during this time. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church of Tyrone, 294 Jenkins Road, Tyrone, GA 30290. Roy’s memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy of love and service will be remembered with great fondness. Guestbook

  1. The staff at Southern Cremations and Funerals at Holly Hill wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Ewing.

  2. He was the best Pappy I knew! I loved sitting in my “ice cream chair” waiting for him to scoop me my favorite ice cream flavor or running to him from the laundry room to his chair and giving him the biggest hugs. Even when he would tap my back to let me know the hug should probably be over, I would never let go. Pappy is the best man and I am so grateful I got to be a part of his life!

  3. Our hearts are saddened by the loss of Roy. Such a sweet heart and will always remember the trip we all took to Holland. Rest in peace, dear man. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
    With love, Tommy and Barbara
