Sandra Jackson Canty Obituary
Sandra Jackson Canty was born on January 17, 1939, and was the first daughter of the late Gilbert and Ernestine Jackson of Marietta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Reginald D. Canty, and sister Lessie Jackson McMillian Roscoe.
She attended elementary and high school in Marietta and later graduated from Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) with degrees in Education and Music in 1962. She was baptized at a young age at Cole Street Baptist Church. Her early professional years included teaching at M. Agnes Jones Elementary in Atlanta and at Wright Street Elementary School in Marietta.
Sandra was married to the late Robert H. Canty of Cartersville, Ga. To this union were born two children – Lisa Rene and Reginald D. Canty. She and family subsequently moved to Los Angeles, California where she taught for 35 years in the Los Angeles and Compton Unified School Districts. She was also briefly employed with the John Tracy Educational Center in Los Angeles. Sandra achieved bilingual and multi-ethnic relations certifications from California State Long Beach and Pacific Christian College. As an accomplished pianist, she earned additional certifications in music and audio visual from Pepperdine University and UCLA.
Sandra was a member of the Olivet Lutheran Church in Hawthorne, California. While a member at Olivet, she was secretary of the church council, taught Vacation Bible School, and was an active member of Olivet Lutheran Church Women’s Club.Sandra leaves to cherish her loving memories one daughter, Lisa Rene Canty, one sister Jennifer Jackson Harper (Orester, Jr.), three grandchildren: Gregory Reliford (Melissa), Adrienne Echols, and Robert Echols (Darcell); 10 great grandchildren: Amy Reliford, Chaila Reliford, Jeven Reliford, Robert J. Echols, Jr., Kylon Smith, Reagan King, Kendall King, Uriyah Echols, Nehemiah Echols, and Symadiyah Joy Echols; 3 great great grandchildren: Nayeli Knight-Reliford, Sora Molinyawe Reliford and Rosa Reliford. Loving memories will also be cherished by her nieces and nephews: Gilbert McMillian, Samadia Shabazz, Jerry Harper (Joyce)and Tanisha Harper.
The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Grady Haney and Patricia Rogers Randall Woods, Fresenius Dialysis Center and Bartow Transit for their love and efforts providing care and assistance to Sandra during her illness.
