Thyra T Johnson

Thyra Tassin Johnson passed away peacefully at her home on July 16, 2025, at the age of 85, entering eternal rest with her Lord. Born on October 19, 1939, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Thyra was the beloved only child of Lucille T. Carlos and Farrell Tassin. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Elbert G. Johnson; cherished daughter, Rochelle A. Johnson; and her loving parents. Thyra’s memory lives on through her children: Elbert G. Johnson Jr. (Myrna) of New Orleans, LA; Sean Johnson-Woods (Nathan) of McDonough, GA; and Rene J. Pittman (Stanton) of McDonough, GA. She was a proud grandmother to Brandy Gaines, Elbert G. Johnson III, Rodrick Johnson, Nathan Johnson (Kristina), Christina Williams (Alfredo), Stephanie Pittman (Aaron), and Stanton B. Pittman Jr. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren: Elbert Johnson IV, Connor Williams, Caleb Williams, Peyton Williams, Sofia Johnson, and Paisley Williams. Thyra also shared a special bond with her dear friend, Donald Schonzeit, whose unwavering support and love brought joy and comfort to her life. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to “Papa Don,” whose beautiful spirit is deeply cherished by all. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1956, Thyra went on to build a distinguished career with the United States Coast Guard, serving both as a civilian and a reservist. Her dedication earned her numerous honors, including: Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct MedalCoast Guard Meritorious Service RibbonMarksmanship Award RibbonCoast Guard Achievement MedalCommandant’s Letter of Commendation RibbonNational Defense Service MedalArmed Forces Reserve Medal Thyra’s life was filled with creativity, warmth, and adventure. She found joy in crafting, cooking, traveling, solving puzzles, and watching game shows. Above all, she treasured family trips and the time spent with loved ones. As the matriarch of her family and a mentor to many in her community, Thyra touched countless lives with her wisdom, kindness, and unwavering strength. Her presence was a blessing, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.

  1. Thyra, Both Bonnie and I will miss you terribly. There were such memories and laughs we shared together at friends and work colleagues–this small text box is not nearly big enough. I was going thru pics from our days at USCG HQ (Naval Engineering) and ran out of space to post them today. I will continue to find them and share them with Sean and Albert untl they I run out of space. Your are in that special place we always talked about and you will always be in our thoughts and hearts.
