Cynthia Chambers Scarlett

October 27, 1926 ~ February 17, 2020

Cynthia Louise Chambers was born in Jamaica, West Indies on October 27, 1926. As a little girl, she welcomed Jesus Christ into her life and remained a devout Catholic ever since. She was the “Big Sister” to her three siblings: Noel Forbes: Deceased (Puddin), Norman Silvera (Beatrice) and Myrtle Nash (Allan). In her early twenties, she decided to leave the beautiful beaches and start a new adventure in the United States of America. Her loving Aunt, Mable Knight lived in Harlem, New York and welcomed her with open arms. Not having children of her own, “Auntie”, became her “stateside” Mother. Cynthia was a hard worker, who was determined to “make a life for herself”. In conversations with young women, Cynthia was known to advise them to always “be your own woman”. Taking her own advice, she excelled as a bookkeeper for companies to include Rupert Murdoch Publications. One day, while at a movie theatre, a handsome young man named, Victor Scarlett, began to throw popcorn at her. She fussed at him while enjoying the butter from the popcorn and he won her over. He pursued her until she agreed to marry him. From that union, they had three children. Her loving son, Lloyd (Elice), who is awaiting her arrival at the pearly gates. Her two surviving daughters, Karen (Henry) and Michelle (Carlos) are left to carry on her legacy. As a mother, she was soft spoken but her children knew not to mess with her because she could quickly turn into the “crazy lady” who would throw her shoe at them in a “New York minute”. Her hard work paid off and she was able to retire and set sail to sunny Florida. Still being full of life and seeking purpose, she became a volunteer for various causes to include being an advocate for senior rights. She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for all who entered her doors. She was known for her awesome “rice and peas and ox tails”. She loved yard sales and would insist that her daughter, Michelle, stop and take a look. That “look” would always end up with an item going into the car. Not having a drivers’ license, she relied on Carlos, her son-in-law, and his friends, who were LYNX bus drivers. They would take her wherever she wanted to go. She rode the bus so often that they named her Ms, Gonzalas….why still we don’t know??? Having been a strict mom, her kids would laugh when any of her grandchildren or great-grands were around because she spoiled them rotten. Some even decided to camp out at her house indefinitely. No names mentioned. You all know who you are! Roll call (Grands): Maurice (Meco), Jevon (Sian), Doron (Queen), Cimone, Diyonne (Chris), Carlos (Yahneshia), Joshua (Lyndsi), JT, Tasha, Cisha. (Great-Grands and Great-Great-Grands): 20 loved ones. Growing weary in sunny Florida she decided to move to “Hotlanta”, where she spent a lot of her time going shopping, playing Bingo and scratching lottery tickets. She enjoyed being “on the go” and if, you had car keys in hands, she was ready to ride. Knowing this, her bonus son and daughter, Jim and Justine, would always pick her up and take here out. She would entertain them with conversations that would include “the kitchen sink” and anything else that was on her mind. Her life well lived proved you don’t have to pursue some great calling beyond loving the people around you to make a sizable impact. She leaves behind a loving family to honor and cherish her memory. Go in peace and be with the Lord. We love you always and forever!
