James Roy Stewart

James R. Stewart of Powder Springs, GA died Sunday, July 12, 2020. A native of Atlanta, was born October 1, 1935 and was a proud graduate of O'Keefe High School and one of the "Fighting Irish". He attended John Marshall Law School and had a successful career in insurance, retiring as senior sales manager for the United Insurance Company of America. Mr. Stewart served in the United States Air Force, taught karate for over 20 years in the Cobb County Community Schools and won 2 national karate championships. He coached football and basketball for the Smyrna Athletic Association, Milford, and the Smyrna Vols. Mr. Stewart was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and volunteered in the geneaology library. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Stewart, parents James Roy and Minnie Pugh Smith, and grandmother Mary Pugh. Survivors include his children Patricia Marie Stewart of Powder Springs, GA; James Randall Stewart (Penny) and Brian William Stewart ( Lorelei), both of Rexburg, ID; Debra Valentine Grogan (Shannon) and Michael Alan Stewart, both of Powder Springs, GA. Fourteen grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren, and a special cousin, Marlene Pugh Gunn, with whom he was raised also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Thursday, July 16 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 2595 Macland Road, Powder Springs, GA with Bishop Phillip Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 PM at the Columbarium at Southern Cremations and Funerals at Cheatham Hill, 1861 Dallas Highway, Marietta, GA.
