Robert James Balfour

Robert James Balfour (“Bob”), age 92, passed away peacefully at home in Atlanta, Georgia on August 12, 2020. Bob is survived by his wife Dawn Gloria Balfour; his son Kevin Scott Balfour (wife Christy); his daughter Lisa Kay Balfour Hyman (husband Ron); his daughter-in-laws Kris Balfour and Trish Balfour; his sister-in-law Nancy Markley; his step-son Charles Johnson, Jr. (wife Amy); step-daughter Cindy Ozbilen (husband Murat); step-daughter Renee Padgett (husband Ted); 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his former wife Janet Nyland Balfour; son Robert James Balfour, Jr.; and son David Andrew Balfour. Bob was born on November 3, 1927 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to parents David & Margaret Moodie Balfour. He attended Decatur High School and played violin in the first Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. He went on to graduate from Georgia Tech in 1949 with a degree in Management and following his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Bob became one of General Electric’s first computer programmers. He eventually moved into the banking industry and retired from Bank South in Atlanta in 1993. Bob was very active and deeply involved at Peachtree Presbyterian for the past 40 years. He enjoyed the many friendships developed in Sunday School, Choir, and Men’s Bible Studies. His family and friends will always remember him for his strong faith, quick smile, deep commitment, and generosity. A public service will not be scheduled due to the Coronavirus but please enjoy the attached slide show celebrating Bob’s life and feel free to leave your thoughts and comments for the family.

  1. I’m very saddened by the passing of Papa. He was such a strong, caring and faithful man and the best grandfather I could ever ask for. While I will miss him greatly I am so very thankful for the time I spent with him on this earth. I will always cherish memories of going to church with him as a little girl and also sharing both joy and sorrow with him during some of my most important moments in life. I will never forget all of that he taught me and did for me and I will take comfort knowing that he will be with me always. Love, Brittany Balfour Padget
