Dr. Lee Amason, Jr.

May 30, 1960 ~ August 29, 2020

Dr. Lee Amason, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 30, 1960 and was the oldest of five children. Lee grew up in Greenville, South Carolina until age 10, when he moved to Valona, Georgia where he worked in the family-owned seafood business. As crab fishermen working from a plywood boat after school, Lee and his brother Allen were recognized as the youngest commercial fisherman in Georgia, at the ages of 11 and 9. Lee and his siblings also spent many summers with their grandparents at the Atlanta Yacht Club on Lake Allatoona, in north Georgia. Lee attended Glynn Academy High School (‘78), where he was one of the fastest on the Track and Field Team. He also had a passion for music, and played bass guitar, with several bands including “High Tide,” and the Jazz Band “Showroom Finish,” which won the state high school talent competition in 1978. Lee went on to study at Valdosta State College where he majored in Biology and then to the Medical College of Georgia where he obtained his Doctorate of Medicine in Dentistry. Lee practiced dentistry for 34 years in Kennesaw, Georgia. He also volunteered as a dentist with Good Samaritan in Austell, Georgia. Whether he was at work, a wedding, or a funeral, he could always be seen in his red Converse high-tops, smiling, and lightening the mood. Lee was a free spirit who loved the outdoors. Aside from playing bass guitar, his favorite pastimes were walking, biking, boating, snow skiing, and rock climbing. He spent most of his time in the company of his wife, Tia, and their dog, Cabe. Lee loved to trade jokes and stories over a cold beer. Lee is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tia Lin Amason, son Charlee Morgan Amason, mother Virginia Chase Kelly (Pat), step-mother Vivian Amason, brothers Allen Amason, Andy Amason (Carole), Matthew Amason (Erica), and sister Bitsy Amason Bernat (Kurt), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepson Del Ray Hough, father Jackson Lee Amason, Sr., sister-in-law Margaret (Cricket) Amason, maternal grandparents Charlie and Bitsy Chase, and paternal grandparents Guy and Shirley Amason. Lee was loved by his family, friends, and patients, and he will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations are sent to the Hemophilia Organization of Georgia (https://www.hog.org/).

  1. Terry Kennedy Jennings says:

Lee & my brother Bert were close friends growing up and pulled a few shenanigans! We haven’t been in contact for years, but there are just people you never forget or quit thinking and caring about. That was Lee. Prayers for all of his family. Terry Kennedy Jennings

    • Lee was our family dentist for over 20 years. We got to know both he and Tia over those years. My husband still insists he gave the best (least painful) shots of any dentist ever. He excelled at and loved what he did. We loved seeing him in his Converse red high tops!! Our hearts break for Tia and Charlie and we will keep them in our prayers in the days ahead. Cam and Kathy Catts

  2. Don, Ann, Michelle Smith says:

Dr. Amason was not only an exceptional dentist, but also one of the most caring and compassionate individual that I have ever encountered. He was truly a dentist for people like me , who feared going to the dentist. He established a culture in his practice that was calming and extremely professional. He took the time to hear your personal stories. And he always took time out of his busy schedule to call after each procedure, to see if you were making a successful recovery. He lived the Hippocratic Oath. Dr. Amason God bless you and thanks for all the years that you served as my family’s dentist. Rest In Peace, Ann Smith & Family (Don and Michelle)

  3. Don, Ann, Michelle Smith says:

Mrs. Amason and family our Condolences are with you during the Homegoing of Dr. Amason.

  4. Lee will be greatly missed! He was one of a kind coming to all family events in his red converse!

  5. As a first cousin to Lee and nearly the same age, there are more memories than I can count. However probably the most extraordinary was crab trapping in that small boat. He’d pull the trap and “let “ me bait it which involved poking the hook through from one eye to the other. A real girly thing. Lee there is no end to how much you are missed.

  6. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  7. Dr. Amason was a wonderful man. He will be missed. Rest In Peace Dr. A.
