Roy Joseph O'Nan

Marietta, GA – Roy Joseph O’Nan, 82, of Miami, Florida and Marietta, Georgia passed away on October 23, 2020 at his daughter’s home. A memorial service will be held on November 21st at 10 a.m. at the Columbarium of Southern Cremations and Funerals at Cheatham Hill. Born on October 15, 1938, in Louisville, KY, Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Isadore and Madeline Priscilla (Wey) O’Nan who moved to Miami when Roy was an infant. He worked in his father’s business after graduation from Miami Jackson HS., enlisted in the US Air Force, and served as a reservist for four years. He married Barbara Ann West (Lea) on September 25, 1965-1979 and they had a daughter and son. He married Pat Weinbaum (Campbell) May 20, 1986-2005. Roy earned his general contractor’s license from Miami Dade Community College, designed and built his first home, and enjoyed a long career in the construction industry. At 55 years old, he designed and built his last custom home in Miami and was proud that it survived a direct hit from Hurricane Andrew in ’92. He moved to Marietta, Ga in 2006 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Roy enjoyed many hobbies throughout his lifetime, among them his love of automobiles, cultivating plants, caring for his cats and birds, and photography. A founding member of the Kendall Camera Club, he was one of the club’s most dedicated members. Roy served as President, Director, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as newsletter and advertising Chair. Over the years he won several awards for his photography. In his senior years, he was an avid technology enthusiast, building many computers from “scratch” and constantly dreaming up new inventions. Roy was preceded in death by his sister, Donna O’Nan Fitts and is survived by his brother, James O’Nan, and sister, Patricia O’Nan Crews (John); his daughter, Annette O’Nan Simpson (Eric) and son, Michael O’Nan (Gillian); six grandchildren, Christopher Millar (Nina), Chelsea Carpenter (Steven), Amber Simpson, Connor O’Nan, Cate O’Nan, and Finn O’Nan; a great-grandson, Nathan Millar; a niece and four nephews.
