Curtis Frederick Cannington, 92, passed away on December 7, 2020. Fred is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean (Oakes) Cannington of Buford, Georgia.
Fred was born April 21, 1928 to James Allen and Lola Belle (Touchton) Cannington in Cook County Georgia.
Fred grew up on a farm in South Georgia and enlisted in the US Army in 1947. He was promoted to First Lieutenant and served in the Army Security Agency until leaving service as a Captain in 1957. While in the Army, Fred was stationed in Germany, Korea, Japan and at the Army Security Agency in Washington, DC.
Upon leaving military service, Fred worked as an electronic communications specialist. He obtained his Georgia Land Surveyors License and opened his land surveyor business. He worked in that industry until retirement.
Fred and his family moved to Toccoa, Georgia in 1967 where he was an active member at Rock Creek Baptist Church. At the time of his death, he and his wife were living in Buford, GA.
In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by five of his children including daughter Deirdre (Paul) Kirby of Jasper, GA; son Jay (Dianne) Cannington of Acworth, GA, daughter Colleen (Gary) Bryant of Midlothian, VA, daughter Sheila Smith, of Athens, GA; and son Art (Ellen) Cannington of Bethlehem, GA. Fred is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his son, Byron Cannington, one great-grandchild and his 9 siblings.
Fred’s family will have a private memorial service in Buford, GA. His wife requests no flowers. Anyone wishing to honor Fred may consider a donation in Fred’s honor to one of the following organizations:
