Fairburn Southern Cremations & Funerals
Michael Earl Washington, Sr. was born on September 7, 1960 in Columbia, South Carolina to Roy and Gladys Washington. He transitioned to meet our Lord and Savior on April 1, 2021. In his final hours he was surrounded by family who were joined in prayer as he entered eternal rest.
Mike, as he was affectionately called, was a 1979 graduate of Dreher High School. While in high school he enjoyed playing the drums in the high school marching band.
Michael moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1991 and began his career with the Nabisco Atlanta Bakery. He was employed by Nabiso for 29 years and held various positions until his retirement in March 2020. He was a proud member of the Local 42-BCTGM union. He loved his job and loved being a part of the Atlanta Bakery family. He was proud to say that he made Nabisco cookies for a living.
He was a loving and devoted husband to Mechelle Washington for 22 years. Together they raised 3 children. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, fishing, perfecting his lawn and making memories with his family. He always put his family first and showed them unconditional love. When he became a grandfather it was one of the happiest days of his life to see his legacy continue.
He always acted as a big brother and mentor to the young men in his neighborhood and at work. He rewarded the kids for making good grades by taking them out to eat and spending time with them. They affectionately called him “Uncle Mike”. He always spoke about the importance of an education, family, integrity and the responsibility they had as black men.
Michael had the ability to bring out the best in everyone he met. Being naturally charismatic, he was able to bring a smile to the faces of friends and strangers alike. He had a positive outlook and showed his love for others through his actions and words. He never met a stranger and would give the shirt off his back to help someone. He cared deeply for his family and treated his friendships as an extension of his family. He was caring, courageous and hard-working. He was always there for a friend in need.
He was preceded in death by his brother Warren Washington.
