Mary Aileen Turner

February 21, 1930 ~ June 14, 2021

Turner, Mary Stretch, age 91, died peacefully surrounded by family in Atlanta, GA, on June 14, 2021. Mary was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 21, 1930. Her family moved to West End Atlanta area when she was a young child. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, she met and married Warren C. Turner, Jr. the love of her life, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in 1950. They made their home in Atlanta, raising five children, and were active in St. Jude the Apostle Church. Mary always took great pride in her Irish ancestry and was a weaver of stories of her family and childhood--sometimes solemn, most times raucous, always entertaining. Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to all. She was a doer, worker in her church community. She was passionate about her welcoming and fun-loving family, loved unconditionally, relished any opportunity to travel, and always, always opened her home and heart to one and all. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles C. Stretch and Mary Ward Stretch; her loving husband of 56 years, Warren C. Turner; and her daughter, Mary Margaret Turner. She is survived by her remaining four children, Michael Turner, Jasper, GA; Cathy Strickland, Atlanta, GA; Chris (Lauren Mross) Turner, Atlanta, GA; Pat Turner, Fairbanks, AK; eight loving grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one on the way. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held in St. Mary’s Chapel at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Monday, June 21, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., at 4465 Northside Drive, N.W., Atlanta, GA 30327. Private interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in her name online at the Center for the Visually Impaired (cviga.org) or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org).

  1. Mrs Mary was a dear friend of mine while I lived in Georgia. She took me in like a daughter. She was always there for me to talk,eat , laugh. And she could really talk. She would tell be to be quiet so she can get it all out. Lol! We had a great 4yrs together. Also kept in touch. I will truly miss her. It will not be the same when I come to Georgia and can’t see her face,smile and laughter. Loved her dearly!

  2. Mary was a huge part of my life as my former Mother-In-Law, she loved fiercely and kept the entire family whole throughout her life. She will be missed by all who knew her.
