Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Joseph ”Joe” Richard Luckie of Marietta, Georgia and formerly of Riverdale NY, went to be with the Lord Tuesday evening, June 15th 2021. After suffering a brief illness, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Joe is survived by his wife Karen (Abercrombie) Luckie, daughters Megan (Brian) Hartman, Kristina (Chris) Spain, Emily (Trevor) Lewis, son Ryan Luckie, brothers Terrence (Lori) and Richard (Jennifer) Luckie, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts. He was a loving and proud “GrandJoe” to his four grandchildren Caroline, William, Avery, & Baylee. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph Vincent and Margaret Theresa Luckie.
Born on July 1st, 1955 in Manhattan, NY, Joe grew up playing basketball, “hide the belt”, and “box ball" with his brothers and friends. Afterwards, they would head to Leo’s for egg creams and pretzel rods. The family enjoyed their summer vacations to Ocean Beach New Jersey where lots of fond memories were made. He went on to graduate from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY with a degree in English. In 1978 he chose to follow his family and moved to Marietta, Georgia. He had an impactful career at IBM that lasted 32 years and is remembered as a caring manager and a genuine friend.
Joe was a true family man and a loving and devoted father, husband, and grandfather. A basketball fan to his core, he was a former All Hollows High School basketball player and a season ticket holder for the Atlanta Hawks. He enjoyed coaching and sharing his love of sports with others.
Joe never met a stranger. He enjoyed talking and interacting with others and had a thick New York accent that even after 40 years in the south, never faded. Those closest to him will remember him for his love of the beach and lake, his great taste in music, a love for driving, his skills on the Big Green Egg, and of course, his appreciation for a good top shelf Texas Margarita.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday June 21st 2021 at 2:00 PM at The Catholic Church of Transfiguration, 1815 Blackwell Road, Marietta, Georgia, 30066. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joseph’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Humane Society of Cobb County 148 S Fairground Street SE, Marietta, GA 30060 or Good Mews Animal Foundation 3805 Robinson Road NE, Marietta, GA 30068

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Joe. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to learn of his passing in time to attend the funeral Mass. I worked with Joe for several years at IBM at colony Square. We got into trouble together along with Jeff Foxworthy who worked with us at that time too! “New York Joe” Was funny and a little crazy and we managed to get ourselves into trouble a few times and Jeff Foxworthy taught us how to pull off a practical joke on the job. I’m sorry I lost touch with Joe I never got to meet his family. I will remember his loved ones in prayer and will always keep fond memories of Joe.
I can’t believe Joe is gone. I wish someone would have let me known so that I could have paid my respects. I worked with him for many years at IBM and he was a great person. RIP my friend. Prayers for Karen and all family and friends.
P.S. I guess the Hawks are doing it for you.
I worked with Joe at IBM and I am so sorry to hear about his passing. I knew him as a super guy, kind, down to earth, just one of the best. BTW, I loved his thick NY accent!! May your memories of Joe be a blessing.
