Horace Eugene Reeves

September 5, 1937 ~ July 30, 2021

Horace Eugene “Punchy" Reeves of Rutledge, GA, died peacefully at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA on Friday, July 30, 2021. Born in Atlanta, GA, on September 5, 1937, he was the son of Hoyt and Miriam Shaw Reeves. He grew up in Stone Mountain, GA, and he was a proud Stone Mountain High School Pirate. He excelled in sports in high school. He was player of the week, All Region player, and featured on the Bobby Dodd radio show numerous times throughout his High School football career. He also played basketball, baseball and ran track, where he still holds records at Stone Mountain High School for the 100-yard dash. On January 14, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Mildred Yvonne Wilkes, and they have three daughters, who were the apple of his eye. He retired from Kraft Foods after 38 years of service. Additionally, Horace was a Music Director at many Baptist Churches for over 50 years. Upon his retirement, he and Yvonne moved to Rutledge, GA, where he continued his legacy and made an impact on the community. Despite suffering from multiple myeloma for over eight years and resultant kidney disease, heart disease for 30 plus years and various related illnesses, he continued to serve the Lord as Music Director at East Newton Baptist Church in Covington, GA where he was serving at the time of his death. Horace was also an avid deer and turkey hunter. Even after years of battling cancer, he still enjoyed hunting and the serenity and closeness to God when he was in the woods. Horace was a loving and doting husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family more than life itself. Horace is survived by his three daughters, Vickie Reeves Jenkins (Lloyd), Terry Yvonne Reeves (Doug Martin) and Tammy Reeves Deraney (Joseph), and grandchildren Phillip Juhan (Barbara), Shannon Juhan (Jamy), Justin Hendrix (Toni), Stephen Reeves Hendrix, Briana Raines (Pat), Brandi Holcombe and Candace Higgins, as well as several step grandchildren and great grandchildren, sister Loraine Reeves Campbell, brother Ricky Reeves, and other relatives and many, many friends. Horace was scheduled to perform at the Rutledge Summer Concert Series on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. at Rutledge City Park, 113 Fairplay Street, Rutledge, GA. There will now be a musical celebration featuring Horace’s music, performances by family members and sharing of memories by family. Everyone is welcome. Please bring lawn chairs for seating. Due to Yvonne's ongoing health issues, as well as the rise in Covid-19 cases, the family respectfully requests that everyone keep a safe distance when visiting. Horace was very concerned about Covid and the health and welfare of his family and friends and would want everyone to remain safe and well. A memorial service and celebration of Horace's life will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. at the Social Circle Theater, 650 Ashley Drive, Social Circle, GA. 30025. The family will receive visitors in the lobby of the theater at 2:30 p.m. Masks are required. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to either Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA, or East Newton Baptist Church in Covington, GA. Horace was cremated at Southern Cremations and Funerals in Covington, GA. Please visit www.southerncremations.com to sign the guest book.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Horace and I grew up together on Silver Hill Drive in Stone Mountain ,Georgia. I remember seeing a bile of boys in his front yard what I later learned was football. Then I married his wife’s brother and we were friends and family. He will be so missed. He was a good man. I loved to hear him laugh and sing. Have a good time in heaven Horace an sing to all our friends and family. I love you.

  2. Horace was a very talented singer. I loved to hear him sing in that special big band style! Thank you for making an impact in my life.

  3. To the Reeves family, our hearts are saddened by the news of Horace passing, not sad for where he is now (singing for our Lord) but sad that we won’t here him singing through the woods or see his sweet face. We loved to be sitting on our front porch and hear him whistling or singing . He never missed the chance to wave or say hi when he saw us. What a kind and loving man, and the most terrific neighbor. You all our in our hearts and prayers. May our Lord give you peace and comfort as Horace waits in heaven to see each one of you. Love Michael & Kelly Wood

  4. I remember when I married Horace’s nephew Travis Wilkes. After the ceremony we walked to the reception hall of the church and I heard this beautiful voice singing an Elvis song. It was beautiful! Thank you for sharing Horace with me. He brightened up my world ! Praying for you all. Love Heather

  5. Memories of singing in the choir at Rowland Hills Baptist Church.
