Fairburn Southern Cremations & Funerals
Gilbert Mitchell, Jr. was born on June 27, 1953, to the union of Gilbert Mitchell, Sr., and Serina Marie Alexander Mitchell in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the second oldest of nine children. His parents taught him at an early age that he was expected to be a role-model and an example for his siblings to follow.
He was a teenager when he met Janiece Barnes in their new neighborhood, and he knew she would be with him for a lifetime. From dating to marriage, they were together for 51 years. They were blessed to have two children and eight grandchildren.
Gilbert enjoyed bowling, playing sports and participating in races. His health and fitness were encouragement and motivation to many who knew him.
Gilbert worked at several jobs throughout his lifetime. Wherever he worked he was always an exemplary employee. He retired from MARTA in 2020.
Helping people was a major part of Gilbert's life. He volunteered at many organizations in the Atlanta area. It wasn’t uncommon for him to give a ride to a stranger or go out of his way to help someone.
Gilbert was a man with exceptional character and grace. He demonstrated his strength and positive disposition to all by the way he lived his life day by day. He showed his family what dedication, perseverance and hard work could achieve by his accomplishments.
He was the life of every party, and the light that brightened every dark room. He had a contagious laugh that will never be forgotten. He made his transition from this earth on Thursday, January 6, 2022, but his legacy will go on.
Due to Covid-19 a private Funeral Ceremony will be held.

To the family Love and peace . From: Eddie&Gwen Freeman.
Mr. Mitchell was a kind and gentle person. We were neighbors. One day I heard something outside my house on the roof and looked out and saw that he was cleaning our gutters. That was who he was. My husband and I are so glad to have known and befriended him. Thanks to Janiece and family for sharing. We will miss seeing him and talking to him. Love, Larry and Evelyn White
My deepest sympathy, he was such a wonderful and pleasant person to be around. So sorry for your loss.
I was so sorry to hear of Mitch transitioning, my heartfelt condolences go to his wife and family. He was a great guy to work with at Marta and a lot fun talking about football teams, he will be missed. JMomon
