Andrew Phillips

Andrew Guitar Phillips was born on December 10, 1932, in Rayle, GA, to Captain Phillips and Emily Mattox Phillips. The family moved to St. Simmons Island where Andy attended elementary school and Risley High School where he ran track, pole-vaulted, played football, basketball, and sang in the choir. Andy was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany for 2 years. He served as a Survey Instrument Operator for the 529th Observation Battalion, Infantry Division. Andrew received the National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Andrew was admitted to Morehouse College where he played football and track. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics. Upon graduation, Andy taught seventh-grade mathematics at Whiteford Elementary school from 1961 – 1969 in the Atlanta Public School System. He changed careers and became the Vice President and Regional Director of the Industrial Educational Development Corporation from 1970 – 1977. Andy returned to the Atlanta Public Schools as a Coordinator and then became the Supervisor of Vocational Academic Education. Andy continued his education at Georgia State University and received a Master of Vocational Education degree in 1985. He was the Program Director and then appointed to the position of Dean of the Health and Human Services Division of Atlanta Technical College. Andy retired as Dean in 2002 from Atlanta Technical College and returned to Atlanta Tech to teach mathematics, he retired again in 2012. Many lives were touched by Andrew Phillips, he was a kind, loving and generous man. He took great pride in helping others and molding the lives of students throughout his career as a teacher, counselor, and in his personal life. Andy met Yolanda Jackson while bowling. They were married in 1995, joining two families, relatives, friends, and many wonderful times together. Andy became a member of Radcliffe Presbyterian Church. He served as a member and was voted into the position of Moderator of the Trustee Board. He was on the Usher Board and a member of The Men Radcliffe. He was inducted into the Radcliffe Living Legends in 2014. Andy was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Ada Lambda Chapter. He served on the board of Directors of the Andrew Young Family YMCA. He was a volunteer for the Cobb County Board of Elections & Registration. Andy was also a member of the Uni-Hawks Unlimited and the Foxy Golfers. Andy is survived by his wife Yolanda Jackson Phillips, his sons, Andre Phillips, Jason Jackson, James Jackson, Julian Jackson, and daughter Georgine Rhinehart, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, and daughter.
