Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Bobbie was born and raised in Mayfield, Kentucky, the youngest of three children to Cecil and Marion Cobb. Being the youngest, she had a bit of a rebel and goofy streak to her. When she first watched Back to the Future and saw Marty on the skateboard holding on to the back of the jeep, she laughed and said that she used to do that. Bobbie was very fond of her hometown and graduated from Mayfield High School, class of 1970, where she was a member of the golf team, band, and choir. She loved music and loved to sing. She would, quite often, break into a song relating to whatever she may have just heard or seen.
After graduating high school, Bobbie was able to travel to Europe with her older brother, and cherished the memories of all the countries that she was able to visit and experience. Upon her return, Bobbie attended Murray State University where she met
the love of her life. She knew that it was meant to be the moment they kissed, because “their noses fit”.
Bobbie has lived in Marietta for the past 33 years but always carried a piece of her hometown with her and was devastated last year when a tornado tore through the small town and destroyed the church where she was married. She also spent a few years living in Memphis, TN, and Fort Smith, Arkansas, where she became an avid Arkansas Razorback fan.
The mountains and Disney always called to her spirit. Her favorite places to travel were to Disney World and the Smokey Mountains. Bobbie loved being outdoors, hiking up the mountain trails, listening to the babbling brooks, and breathing in the crisp mountain air. The views were always worth the hike. And no matter how many times that she visited Disney World, she would always cry a few tears of joy when she stood at the front entrance gates.
Bobbie Jo, as her childhood friends affectionately know her, had a smile that would light up the darkest room, an old soul with a love for the classics, a contagious laugh, a warm, compassionate heart, and loved and cared for her family and friends passionately and deeply. Her unexpected loss is a very painful one, leaving an empty void. We all take comfort that she has been welcomed into God’s open arms, gained her wings, and has been reunited with her parents, sister, and brother.
Bobbie is survived by her husband Paul, her daughter, Jennifer and husband, Chris, her daughter Amanda, and her grandson, Will.
The family will be receiving friends and guests on Thursday, September 1st, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Southern Cremations & Funerals, located at:

I first met Bobbie over the phone back in n 2009 as I was interviewing at Eagle. I was lost and called for directions, we instantly clicked! She always had input with the decisions in my life good or bad. We said we were sisters and I will miss her Smile always!

I worked off and on with Bobbie for many years at Southeastern Health Services, Meridian Medical Group and Eagle Hospitalists. She was a wonderful colleague and dear friend. Bobbie had a superior work ethic and enchanting smile and disposition. She and I sat in the office together and watched the Twin Towers come down on 9/11 and bonded in our silence and tears. I will miss her deeply.

I was honored to be the “other” Bobbie Hess. Bobbie and I had some good laughs about that. She will always be your guiding spirit and guardian angel. You will hear her often or see signs from her and even feel her presence. Bobbie Jo was more than a sister-in-law. May all of you find peace whenever she crosses your mind. Love, Sis/Aunt Bobbie
Q: How did you meet Barbara?
A: I grew up in Mayfield, Kentucky and went to high school with Bobbie. I’m not sure if we went to the same grade school. We shared many classes together and lots of laughs, even though they weren’t encouraged in class! I lost touch with her after we had graduated and gone our separate ways. I enjoyed reuniting with her on Facebook, where we shared so many of the same views and ideas of the world as we saw it and learning about our families and what we enjoyed. So many things we had in common! I was happy to learn about her life, glad and sometimes surprised at how her life had turned out, glad that she kept up some of the common rebel in us! I was hoping to be reunited with her again, thinking it would be at a class reunion, to hug and commensurate. I, like many others, am so saddened by her sudden passing. She will live on in our memories, with much love.
From the moment I walked into room G360, I knew I had a special patient in front of me. Each time I grabbed her hand and looked into her eyes to talk with her, I felt the warmth & love that she shared with her family. I am so happy to have been apart of her story, along with the rest of the family. Please know I will never forget your wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She, like for all of you, holds a special place in my heart.
– with love, the RN who was truly touched by your family.
Bobby Jo was one of my very best childhood friends. She was the neighbor of our.Rue family. In Mayfield, Kentucky, we literally played together every day. I loved that we had these talent shows in my garage and had neighborhood kids come over. The problem was we had to decide which one of our talents we were going to perform on a weekly basis, I loved this special friend. We moved to Pensacola Florida when I was in the eighth grade and we lost track of each other. In this picture probably from the seventh grade I am in the front row the second person from the right. Chris Dolan is to my right Bobby Jo is on the back row far right next to Kathy Byrd. We were sitting on judy Laird’s front porch. I think it was her birthday.
