Grady Dennis Simmons III

July 31, 1935 ~ September 14, 2022

Grady Dennis Simmons Jr. was born in Eatonton, Putnam County, GA on July 31, 1935 to Grady Dennis Simmons Sr. and the former Lillie Mae Allison, with an older sister Carrie Sue and a younger Rebekah. After his father was killed in an industrial accident when he was only two, Dennis grew up in tough circumstances and was contributing to the family’s income by the time he was a teenager. After graduating from Marietta High School in 1955 he joined the US Army and served overseas in Germany for two years. He married Cynthia Alyce Elliott in 1962 and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December. After many years of trying, and really giving up hope of a child, he became the father of his only child, Grady Dennis Simmons III, in 1974. Shortly after his son’s birth they moved to western Cobb County where they have resided ever since. After owning several service stations, a car dealership, and working in the machine tools industry; he found what he felt was his life’s calling in his 50’s and became a licensed hearing specialist, an occupation which he thoroughly enjoyed until his retirement. In past years he had been very active at Due West United Methodist church where he was for many years a beloved children’s Sunday School teacher as well as the President of the Men’s Group where he was responsible for the establishment of a college scholarship and numerous other projects. More than anything he loved his family, and his later years were spent with them surrounding him, especially his grandson Elliott, to whom he was devoted. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Cynthia Elliott Simmons, his sister Carrie Sue Jordan, and his son Dennis III and daughter-in-law Lindsay, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
