Leslie Hugh Phillips

October 2, 1942 ~ September 12, 2022

Leslie H. Phillips (Gunny) of Mableton, Georgia went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 12, 2022. He loved Jesus, his family, his church and his friends. He was always able to find humor in everyday life. Leslie was born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 2, 1942. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Edna Mae Phillips, his sister Sandra Phelps and his grandson Jeffrey Vining. He graduated from West Fulton High School in 1960. He was athletic and played basketball, baseball, tennis and golf. He remained active with the West Fulton Owls Alumni. After graduation he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was an installer for Western Electric/Lucent Technologies for 42 years and a member of CWA Local 3290. After retirement he was an avid golfer always using how wry wit with his golfing buddies. He and his wife traveled and enjoyed southern gospel singings. He was a wonderful dad to his three daughters. He participated in the Cobb County Senior Olympic Games in golf and represented Cobb County at the state level. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play basketball, baseball, lacrosse, football, soccer, performing in theater performances and marching in the band at both the high school and college level. He was the best babysitter for all his grandchildren and great grandsons. He loved going to the beach with family and friends. His favorite destination was New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He was a member of Fortified Hills Baptist Church for 49 years and First Baptist Church of Powder Springs for 30 years. He was active in the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and participated on four missions trips with FBCPS. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Joellyn Phillips; daughters Leslie Jo (Barry) Sangster, Patricia (Brent) Carter, and Kristen Vining; grandchildren Jessica Ludeman, Phillip (Kelly) Sangster, Joshua Vining, and Remington Carter; great-grandsons Wesley, Carson-Lee, Fisher, and William; a nephew and many cousins. A Celebration of Life for Leslie Phillips will be Sunday, October 2, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Powder Springs Christian Life Center. Visitation will be at 2pm with service immediately following at 3pm. The service will be live streamed for those who are unable to attend. If you would like to please wear your favorite golf or sport shirt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leslie’s memory to First Baptist Church of Powder Springs to either the benevolence or mission funds. FBCPS 4330 North Avenue, Powder Springs, GA 30127.
