Michael J Wood (80), of Newnan, GA passed away on the evening on April 3, 2023, holding the hands of his son and daughter.
Michael, fondly known as Mike, was born to Lucia and Howard Wood, on February 1, 1943, in Hagerstown, MD. Mike attended Valley Forge Military Academy and spent time at Georgia Southern University and the University of Georgia where he received his NPDES Certification.
Mike is survived by his loving children Michael Christopher “Chris” Wood (Melodie) of Opelika, AL, and Kimberly “Kym” Michelle Wood of Atlanta GA, and three beautiful grandchildren Kenna Elizabeth (18), Jacob Tyler (16) and Harper Riley (8) whom he loved so dearly. He is also survived by his twin sister Mary Lucia “Sue” Wood Serian (Tom), sister Kelli O’Connell and brother Howard T Wood, Jr (Ellen) and their children. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Lucia and Howard.
Mike was a beloved member of the St. George Catholic church in Newnan, GA where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Assembly 3199) and involved with the St. Vincent de Paul charity. Mike was a lover of sports and spent many years working for Atlanta sports teams including the Atlanta Flames, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Chiefs, and the Atlanta Falcons. Some of his fondest memories revolved around having the opportunity to work alongside his son, Chris at the Atlanta Falcons, where Chris still works to this day, doing the stats for the home games. Mike worked for the 1996 Olympic Games as the Director of Venue Communications for the Equestrian and Mountain Biking events. Mike was also a Georgia High School Association football official for over 30 years, a baseball umpire, a basketball official, and Evaluator of Football. Mike was honored to serve as the 60th President of the Touchdown Club of Atlanta.
Mike never wanted to stop working and was always on the go. He was most recently employed by Lowe’s in Newnan, working under store manager Brian, who he has known for many years. Many will be aware that Mike suffered a massive heart attack while at work and his family will never be able to repay their gratitude to Lisa Allen, Troy Howard, Billy Newsom, Nicole Duncan, and Eli Shelnut who were all involved in saving his life and ultimately granting Mike’s family and friends the opportunity to speak to him one last time before his body was no longer able to support him living here on earth. Mike was a force of nature, strong, charismatic, passionate, and will truly be missed.
Mike’s family will host a Funeral Mass on Thursday, April 13th, 2023 at 10:30 am. The service will be at St. George Catholic Church in Newnan, GA. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Heart Association or the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul - Georgia (www.svdpgeorgia.org) in Mike’s name.

Mike- you always found a way to make me laugh at work when there wasn’t much to laugh at and made some hard situations tolerable. I always looked forward to working with you. Rest easy my friend.
Mike was a part of our family—brother to us–son to our parents — uncle, grandpa to our extended family and friend to our friends for over 40yrs–always making us laugh and enjoy each moment—we loved him much and miss him—our love and prayers to Kym and Harper, Chris Melodie, Kenna, and Jacob who are like family –Love, Terry and Joyce Foster
Mike was a wonderful person & we thought the world of him! We have a hydrangea that he brought us in the spring of 2008 when we had moved to LaGrange. It is beautiful and I always think about him when it blooms in the summer! Prayers continue for your family. Love Pasco & Brenda Tilson
I worked with Mike on game days with the Atlanta Falcons from 1994-98. He was full of charisma and loved his job. We spent many moments laughing, as he loved to prank longtime members of the stats crew. He was a joy to be around, and we stayed in touch for many years. Unfortunately, I lost touch with him in recent years, but will always cherish our friendship. Please send my best to his son, Chris, and to the rest of his family. RIP, Mike!
