McDonough Southern Cremations & Funerals
Ramona Estelle Hayman (Cox), 62, of McDonough, Georgia was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 3, 2023, GA after a brief battle with pneumonia at Piedmont Hospital in Henry County.
Mona was born in Live Oak, Florida to Joseph H. Cox and Dora Estelle Cox (McCollister) on August 24, 1960. The family relocated several times during her father’s military service with the Air Force, including an assignment in Okinawa when Mona was an infant. They eventually settled in Valdosta, Georgia where Mona lived until she moved to the Atlanta area in the late 1970’s.
Mona was a dedicated mother to her only child, daughter Melanie, and was thrilled when she became a grandmother, affectionately known as “MoMo”, with aspirations of moving to Texas to be near her daughter and extended family.
She had a servant’s heart and spent her career as a waitress in Clayton and Henry Counties for over 30 years. Mona always had a dedicated customer base that followed her wherever she went, from Golden Corral, Ryan’s, Longhorn and, most recently Rico’s in Stockbridge. So many of her customers and coworkers became lifelong friends and extended family members.Mona was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her daughter Melanie “Georgia” Johnston and Son-In-Law Clay Johnston, (“The Kid” and “The Boy”, as she lovingly referred to them), and granddaughters Mahalie Johnston and Maya Johnston, all of Waco, Texas; numerous cousins throughout Florida and various parts of the country, her Church and Celebrate Recovery Families, and a host of friends and loyal customers.
Her remains will rest in Texas with her family.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 23, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Lighthouse Community Church in Stockbridge, 1615 East Atlanta Road, Stockbridge, GA, with Monroe Bell officiating. A reception at the church will be held immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mona's name to: Celebrate Recovery at Community Bible Church, 2001 Jodeco Road, Stockbridge, GA 30281.

Mrs Mona made a HUGE impact in my life. I saw a woman come into our church and receive prayer. She started out bitter and angry, but then God transformed her life into something So Beautiful.
She shared her testimony of how she cried out to God to take the addiction from her and she felt something tearing away from her chest. She was delivered and set free from the spirit of addiction. She went from being bitter and angry to Smiling so Brightly that you could see the Light of Jesus in her! She started teaching AWANAS and writing scripture on index cards and folding them in her shoe. She would proudly say, “ I am standing on The Word of God.” She had memorized so many of them. Her Faith and Dedication just Amazed and Inspired me!
One day, when I was sitting on my porch, smoking a cigarette, I thought about Ms Mona and what God had done in her life. I prayed,
“God, if you can do it for her,
you can do it for me.
Deliver me and Set me Free.”
I came inside and Paula White said on the TV,
“Do you ever wish you could just quit smoking?”
I thought to myself, “You’re funny God.”
It wasn’t until 3 DAYS later that I realized that I had not had a cigarette! NO, NOT ONE! God had truly done a MIRACLE in me!
I wondered why 3 days?
Well, what else happened in 3 days?
Jesus rose from the Grave!
Old things passed away,
All things become new.
So God was showing me that I was a New Creation! And that Through Him, I was able to overcome the bondage of sin!
PRAISE GOD!
HALLELUJAH!
Since then, I have shared her testimony countless times! Another girl I know was Delivered from cigarettes after I shared me and Mrs Mona’s Tesimony!
For we Overcome by the Blood of the Lamb
and the Word of our Testimony! AMEN?!
I am so thankful to have encountered Ms. Mona and to have Witnessed the POWER OF GOD operating in her Life. It has Truly been a BLESSING. I will NEVER BE THE SAME!
I pray that God would bring you Comfort and that He would give you the Peace that Passes all Understanding.
With Love and Prayers,
Angie Ninan
We met Mona while living in Stockbridge. She quickly worked her way into our lives and those of our pets for which she made our lives better. She became my gal pal and my pray warrior when we had troubles. Mona will always be in our hearts and memories. Until we meet again my friend.
Pictures taken at Rico’s.
Mona sure could make some really good sweet tea.
Georgia, we are thinking of you in your loss and praying for God’s peace and love to shower you and your family during this time. We love you.
Mona and I were like sisters growing up. I was the quiet one; she was the feisty one, but together we were a force to be reckoned with. I wish we had kept in touch during our later years as we lived relatively close to each other without ever knowing it… I meant to reach out but never got around to it and as they say, “Hindsight is 20/20.” She was such a big part of my life from elementary school through high school and I cherish all the fun and crazy times we had together. Melanie, you were blessed to have such a wonderful, strong spirited mom and I know she will be dearly missed by all. Much love and prayers.
Dear Melanie-
Prayers for understanding and peace- for the weeks and months to come- I went to elementary- middle school and high school with your Mom- what seems like just yesterday- is now a lifetime ago- keep your beautiful memories of your Mother close- and share those with your kids each and everyday- in Love and comfort-
