Mr. William Campbell Montgomery

June 24, 1916 ~ December 23, 2013

William Campbell Montgomery – A celebration of the life of William (Bill) Montgomery, 97, of Sandy Springs will be Friday, December 27, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, 4385 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta 30068. Visitation after the service. Bill was born June 24, 1916, to James and Helen Lawrie Montgomery in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the Australia, New Guinea, Hollandia & Philippines in WWII in the 2nd battalion of Amphibian Engineers. He married his soul mate, Joan MacVickar on July 7, 1945 in Plainfield NJ. After a successful career as a modern furniture salesman for Bloomingdale's and Rich's, and a manufacturer's rep for Thayer Coggin, he spent his time sculpting and enjoying the company of his family and many friends. He found great joy in the lives of his family. Grateful for having shared in his life are his son and daughter-in-law, James and Susan Montgomery of Brookhaven; grandchildren William Montgomery and wife Crista Feriozzi of Chicago, and Jeffrey Montgomery of Marietta; and great granddaughter Iris. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Joey in 1991 and grandson Tom in 1997. "Poppa Bill," as he was affectionately called, fondly will be remembered for his enthusiasm and zest for life. When asked about his day, he often would say, "Today was the best day of my life." He never let the challenges of losing his eyesight get him down; in fact, he created intricate sculptures using his hands as his eyes when he could no longer see. He was a mentor to many young men and women, and will be missed by all his dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Thomas C. Montgomery Scholarship Fund, University of North Georgia Foundation, Inc.-Dahlonega, PO Box 1599, Dahlonega, GA 30533 or online at: https://www.northgeorgia.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=202.

  4. I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you in your time of sorrow. May you let God’s Word comfort you when it reads, If a man dies can he live again? …You will call, and I myself shall answer you. You will long for the work of your hands. {Job 14:14, 15}. God will have a longing to resurrect our loved ones who have fallen asleep in death.

  5. So sorry to hear of the passing of your father, Jim. Sending prayers and uplifting thoughts to you and Sue at this time.

  6. He knew me before we met. I will always be grateful for his love and understanding.

  7. Papa Bill, meant so much to so many people, however I fell as if he was “so much more than much”. Let me tell you how I came to meet an angel on earth. The date was July 1, 2009 I was on summer vacation from college and decided to spend it with my brother Christopher J. Walker who resides in Roswell Ga. When I arrived at my brother’s place he told me that we will be picking up Papa Bill for a meeting at 811, now i was excited to meet this Papa Bill. For I have heard so many great things about him through my brothers and I phone conversations . Things like how he will tell you how it is, and how he can make the hardest person crack a smile on the worst of days, but most importantly what a great mentor he was to my brother Chris Walker. So we go to Papa Bills to pick him up and rite off the bat he gives me a hug and say that he loves me. Not a more loving man I thought to myself, at that moment. Then he shows me all his works and pictures of his wife and their wedding and how much he loved her and missed her the he tells me of his loss of sight and his God blessed gift of being a renowned sculpter in his later years from the help of a cowboy and the memory of a woman “his wife”. Then he tells me about his life in service and WW2, and how he still prays for his freindsthat he had lost. Then he starts telling me stories of his adventures, like the time he had a 100 percent paid vacation by the Queen of England herself over a repurposed sign that bore a coat of arms used as his beds head board. Oh the many of stories he told of his life events were just amazing. But not as amazing as the impact that he had on my Brothers life. For my brother loved Papa Bill so much that he would break an engagment just to have a conversation about life. And anyone who has ever met Papa Bill knows what Im talking about. Well i spent the next week with Papa Bill and my brother Chris, and what a great time we had, but most important got to meet my brother’s best freind.

  8. His life, love, and light touched so many people. I’ll always be grateful for his kindness and wisdom.
