Ian Adamson

Ian Andrew Adamson passed away on August 11, 2016 after a courageous and lengthy battle with colon cancer. His family and friends were by his side when he peacefully left this world for the next. Ian was born in the town of Kendal in northern England on May 14, 1962 and had resided in Atlanta since 1990. Born in the Lake District of northern England, Ian followed his passion for culinary arts, attending Catering College in Workington after graduating from Kendal Grammar School. Equally passionate about social issues, he then spent several months in the Peace Camps protesting the UK involvement in nuclear war efforts. He also spent time performing in Big Among Sheep, a band that toured the UK festival circuit. Building on his love of music, he left the UK for Miami, FL in 1987 in order to work for the Rough Trade record label, as a tour manager for the Northern England bands that the label was then promoting. Once in Florida, he quickly began making both an impact in the community and innumerable friends, many of whom he remained close with even as his geography changed to Atlanta. Ian was a creative contrarian, both artistic and wise, and well-known for wearing only black - regardless of the occasion (and the weather)! He was frequently recognized in in-town Atlanta neighborhoods as a thoughtful and concerned citizen, and a veteran manager of in-town restaurants most recently the Olive Bistro on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Ian, always an avid music aficionado, was active in the in-town music scene as well, supporting many local and non-local bands. Ian also was known for his wit, and many who remember him continue to quote him on a daily basis. Ian is survived by his wife of 14 years, Kristina Johnson, as well as his parents Andy and Maureen Adamson of Morecambe, England, and his sister Dee Adamson-Sharpe of Windemere, England. Ian's wide circle of devoted friends also have struggled along side him as he bravely fought his illness. Family and friends have planned a celebration of life to take place at the North Highland Inn Ballroom on September 1, 2016, from 7 to 11pm. Memories, photos, and readings will be shared as Ian is remembered. The gathering is dubbed "Ianfest," in homage to Ian's inimitable spirit. Many attendees plan to share their favorite Ian quotes and stories.
