Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
After a courageous battle with cancer, Calvin Eugene "Gene" Dooley was called home in the early morning hours of June 29th, 2015. Gene was an avid pool player who loved playing with his friends at the Senior Center as well as a strategic Tic-Tac-Toe player, consistently losing to his grandkids. He was also proud of his garden that he worked on over the years in both his hometown of Vinton,Virginia and his adopted home of Atlanta.
Gene worked for Norfolk and Western Railways for almost 40 years. where he met and fell in love with Sandra Cole Dooley, his best friend and wife of almost 49 years. Gene was an incredible husband, father, grand"papa" and an invaluable member of his church community known for his shrewd advice doled out to his friends and family even when it was difficult to hear. He touched the lives and hearts of the people around him and will be remembered for his generosity and wisdom that was tempered by humility and humor. No amount of words used in this tribute could ever express the value his life added to his friends and family. And it is a testament to a great man that his family considered Gene their friend and ally and that worldly goods were not as important as the love for his family.
Gene leaves behind his wife as well as his beautiful and incredibly smart children, Sharon, Cheryl and Stephen. These three children help carry on the enviable Dooley genes with their impressive offspring: Emma(19), Chase(16), Elizabeth(10), Jack(9) and Cole(2) [ with some contribution made by their equally incredible spouses, Greg, Cary and Bob].
Celebration of Gene's life will be held at Southern Cremations and Funerals on Thursday, July 2 at 11am. A firework show in honor of Gene's memory will commence across the nation at dusk on Saturday night. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Calvary Children's Home, which held a special place in Gene's heart.

‘Gene discipled me as a young man and helped me become the man that I am today. My thanks to your family for investing in a young Dishon family, the love you showed us will carry us throughout the rest of our lives. Love you all! Steve, Patty, Sarah & Dawn Dishon’
‘Gene was a friend of my dad and he contacted me on Facebook about 5 years ago to tell me some funny stories about my dad. I remember my dad always spoke very highly of him and after speaking to Gene myself, I learned why. He told me about his life and the love he had for his family. He is going to be missed here on Earth but my dad just got another good friend to join him in Heaven.’
‘The angels in Heaven are singing because one of the finest Christians I have known has entered into Heaven’s glory. Always a smile and positive word for all he knew, Gene was a blessing to all of us. My deepest sympathy goes to Sandra (my dear friend for so many years) and Gene’s precious children–Sharon, Cheryl, and Stephen and their families. May God be with you, giving you His love, His comfort, and His peace. With love, Carolyn (Bolling) Philpott’
‘”Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep” Celebrate his life everyday! Stay strong, HE brought you to it, HE will bring you thru it.’
‘The Indianapolis Patton’s thoughts are with you and your family.’
‘So sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. I met him for the first time as my basketball coach in rec league ball in Vinton, VA and was later able to serve with him in many ways at Vinton Baptist Church before he moved to Atlanta. My prayers are with Sandra, Sharon, Cheryl and Stephen and the rest of the family. May God comfort and bless you in the times ahead.’
‘Gene was a fine gentleman and a great pool player. We will all remember him fondly and miss him at West Cobb Senior Center.’
