Mrs. Betty Louise Douglas

February 12, 2014

Betty Louise Buttram Douglas, 81, originally of Cedartown, GA and currently residing in Woodstock, GA, passed away February 12, 2014 following a long illness. She was being cared for at Tranquility at Kennesaw Mountain and surrounded by her family at the time of death. She is survived by her husband of 63.5 years James B. Douglas, daughters Susan Douglas Woods-Ross (Fred) and Anita Douglas Phillips (Andy), grandchildren Phillip Woods, Micah Phillips and Alex Phillips, three brothers and one sister: Gerald Buttram (Barbara) of Woodstock, VA; Barry Buttram (Jean) of Jonesboro, GA; Dennis Buttram of Powder Springs, GA; and Linda Buttram Cochran (Mack) of Jasper, GA. and numerous nieces and nephews in whom she also took great pride. She is preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Buttram She was known as Betty or "Miss Betty" to her friends, and they were many as she never met a stranger! Though her primary job was as wife, mom and homemaker she also worked for Delta Airlines and Airborne Freight. She took great pride in keeping a beautiful home and worked hard both inside and outside to achieve this. During summer months, care of the family lake house was an additional responsibility she embraced. She was involved in numerous activities throughout her life. When her girls were younger she enjoyed Garden Club and PTA where she served as President for several terms. She taught Sunday School at Dogwood Hills Baptist Church in East Point, GA for many years and is still remembered fondly by some of her students. As her girls grew older the family moved to Riverdale, GA where she continued to be involved in their extracurricular activities. She and her husband joined Riverdale Methodist Church where their love of travel was born. Their first trip was with the church to Israel. After Israel and the marriage of their girls they moved to Woodstock, GA and their travels began in earnest. They visited all fifty states, Hawaii more times than they can remember and many countries around the world. "Miss Betty" even made several solo trips: she went to Cross country skiing to Yellowstone Park to see the winter wildlife and following a trip to Antarctica with her husband made a second solo trip to the Frozen Continent. Cruising was their favorite way to see the world and they made many friends along the way. Aside from her faith in God and family, her other love was volunteering at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. She and her husband served as Co-Presidents of the Volunteers for two years, she pushed wheelchairs, worked in the Gift Shop, Women's Shop and anything else asked of her. She was an active member of the Good Life Club, Red Hat Society, First Breakfast Club Osborne High School and Hillside United Methodist Church. Their last trip was to Ireland and Scotland in August 2011, after which her health began to decline forcing her to give up outside activities. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held Sunday February 16, 2014 at 2pm at Hillside United Methodist Church, Town Lake Pkwy, Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to The Wellstar Foundation, Kennestone Hospital; Wounded Warriors; or Hillside United Methodist Church.
