Marietta Southern Cremations & Funerals
Eric Leroy Worrell (more commonly known as “Roy” to his family) was born on December 24, 1938 in Saint Michael, Barbados to the late Garfield and Edith (Jordan). Eric was a fun loving person with a big personality and zest for life, a smile that would light up a room and a love for helping others. Whenever you met Eric, you were greeted with either a fist bump or a big hug and soon thereafter, he would have a nickname for you. As a boy he was mischievous and active, a trait that he would take into adulthood. He loved to play dominoes, Uno, gin rummy, watch WWE Wrestling, the Price Is Right and old westerns.
Eric attended The Montgomery Boys School in Saint Michael, Barbados, studied carpentry and was a cabinet-maker by trade. In search of bigger and better opportunities, he immigrated to Manchester, England in 1960, but soon returned to Barbados to marry his childhood sweetheart Phyllis Ometa Scantlebury. Eric and Phyllis were married on January 3, 1965 in Bridgetown, Barbados, relocated to East London, England and the two have been inseparable ever since. They eventually settled in Ilford, Essex for 20 years where they would raise five children - Adrian, Wendy, Errol, Harriet and Andrew and he would become an avid West Ham United fan.
Eric would continue to practice his carpentry, making furniture for family and friends and later learning construction. Eric would change his profession in the late seventies to work for the Royal Mail. Eric worked for the Royal Mail in England for several years until he relocated to America and would eventually settle in Queens, NY with his wife Phyllis and two youngest children. While in New York, Eric became certified in ceiling installation, house and roof framing, blueprint reading and construction estimation. His construction jobs included the New York subway, most of the bridges in New York, the Midtown Tunnel, and several skyscrapers.
After living in Queens, NY for 11 years, Eric and Phyllis moved to Kissimmee, Florida where they resided for 22 years. In Florida, Eric was able to return to his love of growing fruits, vegetables and gardening. He also continued to do construction, working on projects at Disney (including Animal Kingdom and Epcot) and was the neighborhood handyman for his church and everyone that met him.
Eric was baptized at the Solid Rock Church of God in 1999 and was an active and devoted member until he relocated to Georgia in 2017. Eric’s final months were spent in Smyrna, Georgia. In his final hours, Eric wanted to be with his family and look at his loving wife of 53 years. Eric went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 6, 2018 at 12:11 p.m. He is preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Edith and siblings Neville and Dennis.
Eric was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. Eric leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Phyllis of Smyrna Georgia; his children Adrian (Teresa) of Essex, England, Wendy of London, England, Errol of London, England, Harriet of Smyrna, Georgia and Andrew (Camilla) of Alpharetta, Georgia; his grandchildren Nadine, Liam, Courtney, Charlotte, Brianna, Jamie, Nia, Aerica; his great grandchildren Christian and Josiah; his brothers Leon, Rixford (Shirley) and sister Marjorie Bowen;. He has several nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and many friends.
