Marietta Southern Funerals & Cremations
Mildred Irene Griffith, born on September 23, 1926, to Samuel DaCosta and Inez Brewster Larrier in Brooklyn, NY, embarked on a life journey that wove a tapestry of love, dedication, and creativity. Born to Barbadian parents, she was one of eleven children, navigating a bustling household with resilience and warmth.
After graduating high school, Mildred showcased her skills as a seamstress along with her sister Phyllis Bascus (deceased) at Areara Brothers. Years later she began a new career at The Dime Savings Bank. Starting as a clerk, she ascended to the role of Supervisor over the mortgage department, a testament to her work ethic and dedication.
On September 6, 1947, Mildred married George C Griffith in Brooklyn, NY. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Carmen and Audrey, forming the foundation of a close-knit family.
Post-retirement, Mildred dedicated countless hours to her children, volunteering as a classroom helper and as a lunchroom assistant. She tirelessly taught her grandchildren the invaluable gifts of literacy and mathematics. Her nurturing spirit extended to teaching generations, leaving an immense impact on her family.
Following her husband's passing, Mildred embarked on a new chapter in Georgia, where she discovered a passion for quilting and needlepoint. Joining a local Quilting Club in Smyrna, she poured her creativity into vibrant masterpieces, reflecting the colors of a life well-lived.
Mildred's zest for life found expression in her travels, exploring the world with dear friends Lola, Naomi, her sister Dorothy, and family. Her adventures earned her a high-ranking membership on Royal Caribbean cruise line, a testament to her vibrant spirit and love for exploration.
Mildred is survived by her daughters Carmen (Bernard) Brown and Audrey Early, as well as her five grandchildren, Kevin (Tasha) Brown, Jason (Diane) Brown, Lisa (Christopher) Bice, Danielle (Daniel) Tyler, and Robert (Lauren) Simon. Her legacy extends to twelve great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, her surviving sister, Rita Shingler, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members each a testament to the lasting impact of a life dedicated to family, creativity, and love.
In celebration of Mildred's rich and meaningful life, may her memory continue to inspire and resonate in the hearts of those who were touched by her warmth and wisdom.

My Condolences to the family. Aunt Mildred will be missed. She always had a kind heart and a beautiful smile. I had fun playing cards with her when Aunt Rita lived in Brooklyn. Those family gatherings were enjoyable. Aunt Mildred never made anyone feel like a stranger. Praying for you all.
Mildred was a wonderful neighbor; such a positive influence and wise lady. I will miss those days she took walks in the neighborhood and brightened up our lives. 🙏
Your friend and neighbor,
Rhonda
was you one of the neighbors that ignored the abuse?
Mrs. Griffith will be missed tremendously by her family and her friends. I know this without a doubt. Her zest for life is unmatched by anyone that I’ve ever known. I say it in the present because she really is in our hearts and she laid her blueprint on us as to how to live life to the fullest!
I claimed her as my honorary grandmother, because she made me feel like one of her grandchildren from the first time we met. That’s a testament to the type of spirit she held!
Mrs. Griffith, thank you for all the special memories! You are missed! ❤️
Your honorary granddaughter,
Amy
Condolences from the Butler family. Remembering the good old days of cookouts, Christmas parties and the just because gatherings with my extended family. Rest in peace Aunt Mildred.
I am sorry I could not be there for Aunt Mildred’s service but I have very fond and funny memories. I was lucky to be able to visit her a few months ago with Donovan as we visited colleges in the area, and she was as sharp as ever. She was asking about my mom’s family in South Carolina and referring to a trip my parents took with mom’s family down to Atlanta to visit and recalled what a fun time they all had.
If I was at the service I would have reminded everyone of how much she loved her “senior discount.” We went on a big trip, I am thinking it was to Florida but possibly Barbados, years ago. We had all converged around the same time at the airport and we went to the rent-a-car place. She comes out to the desk and tells the rep that we need a senior discount and a large van because there are a lot of us and SOME OF US ARE FAT. We all laughed until we cried and I still laugh about it to this day.
Another time we went to visit Aunt Dot in Arizona and somehow I took a side trip with her to Vegas. We had A BALL. I was waffling about buying a large picture from a gallery and she said Carrie just get it, you only go around once. She said I can tell you really love it, you may not come back and it may not even be here when you get back. And sure enough I bought it and it hangs on my wall to this day, still getting great comments from visitors and random people that see it behind me on a zoom call. I always say I bought this when I went to Vegas with my Aunt Mildred who was in her late 70’s at the time. They always look at me funny at that point, but they didn’t know my Aunt Mildred!
We also had a fun time a few years ago when we all went to Florida for a long overdue reunion. I made her into a gif when she was doing an excited dance as we were playing Pokeno, a Larrier family favorite. I will try to share it here, I hope it will be animated (as she was)!
I loved what her neighbor said about joy, because it’s so true. She loved her family, loved reading the WILDLY embellished announcements about every single family member at Christmas, loved basketball, and loved to travel. She was quite the firecracker and I will miss chatting with her, but I loved that she lived such a long full life full of love and family.
