Etla Simmons

December 11, 1926 ~ November 9, 2023

On November 9th, 2023, the world bid farewell to Etla Simmons, a beloved matriarch, educator, and pillar of strength, who passed away at the age of 96. Etla was born on December 11, 1926, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to Idalia Donovan Dowdy and Milton Dowdy. As the eldest child in her family, she embraced her role with grace and responsibility, setting a remarkable example for her siblings, Milton Dowdy and Sylvia Dowdy Nazarrio. Etla embarked on an illustrious journey of learning and service that began when she moved from Puerto Rico to pursue her higher education. Her alma mater, North Carolina Central University, not only nurtured her academic pursuits but also introduced her to her cherished life partner, Clifton Earl Simmons. Their union was a testament to enduring love, lasting nearly six decades until Clifton's passing in April 2009. Armed with an undergraduate degree in Home Economics and a graduate degree in Early Childhood Education, Etla embarked on a fulfilling career. She wore many hats throughout her professional life -- serving as a dedicated social worker, a passionate preschool teacher, and culminating her career by retiring from the Boy Scouts of America alongside her beloved husband. Etla's life was a tapestry woven with love, devotion, and unwavering support for her family. Her strength was palpable despite her petite stature. It was often said that Etla never met a stranger. She was a beacon of consistency, always present for her loved ones, offering unwavering guidance and nurturing support. Her Puerto Rican heritage held a special place in her heart, and she took immense pride in her roots. A woman of profound faith, Etla was an active and devout member of her church. Her commitment was unwavering, serving as the president of the altar guild and a dedicated member of the Episcopal Church Women's Group. Etla's greatest source of pride and joy were her six daughters and their beloved son, late Clifton Jr., may he rest in peace. She and Clifton raised their children with boundless love, care, and wisdom. She instilled in her family the values of having a strong reliance on the Lord, compassion, and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. As we bid adieu to Etla Simmons, her legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith remains etched in the hearts of those she touched. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us through the trials of life, reminding us to embrace each moment with love, fortitude, and a profound dedication to family. She leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love that will continue to resonate through the generations. In her honor, let us celebrate a life well-lived and treasure the profound impact she made on us all. Etla is left to be cherished by her daughters, Idalia Craig, Sylvia Robinson (Lou), Vicky Simmons, Patricia Tallman (Harry), Cynthia Jones (Stanley), grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of good friends and family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clifton, her son, Clifton Jr., and her daughter, Inger. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that remembrances be made in form of contributions to Etla D. Simmons, Class of 1949 Scholarship Fund, North Carolina Central University Alumni Office, 2223 Fayetteville Street PO Box 19363 Durham, NC 27707, or a contribution to her memorial garden can be sent via zelle to ptallman5@gmail.com.
