Wanda Payne

May 7, 1948 ~ May 10, 2018

A large hole in our hearts emerged on May 10, 2018 with the passing of our beloved Mother, Sister, Monner, and friend Wanda Payne. Wanda was the nucleus of her large family and was the one everyone depended on when in need. She loved with all her heart and never refused to help anyone. She was the favorite aunt of all her nieces and nephews, and was a funny, generous, and genuine person with an incredible sense of loyalty to her immediate and extended families. So many conflicting adjectives could be used to describe this incredibly crazy wonderful person, but anyone that knew her understood that she would always be there for them. She loved her white wine, her Atlanta Falcons, reading, visiting with new and old friends, and traveling, especially to New York City, Cherokee, North Carolina and Texas. Her spirit will be with us forever. Wanda is survived by her children Charles Dale Johnston, Jr. and wife Michelle, and Vincent Thomas Johns, her grandsons Vinson Johns and Richard Johnston, her granddaughter Briana and husband John Trufley, and great-grandson Calvin Charles. She is also survived by her six sisters Bobbie and husband Bonnie Pridgen, Whiteville, N.C., Judy and husband Travis Maddox, Piedmont, AL, Jerry Sue Moore, Rex, Ga., Gail and husband Keith Hiebner, Austin Tx., Deborah and husband Wade Berry, McDonough Ga., and Jennifer Blackman, Locust Grove, Ga. She also leaves behind a great multitude of nieces, nephews and close friends too numerous to mention by name, but all fiercely loved by Wanda. She was predeceased by her son, Richard Allen Johnston, and Mother, Mildred Mathis.

  1. She was one of a kind, and we cheerleaders love her dearly. We have so many memories of good times and heart-to-heart talks through the years. She was the one who was no nonsense about life. Wanda always told it like it was. She was truly what you see is what you get. I always thought she was fearless! Rest in peace, sweet cheerleader!
