Mr. Lonnie Olen Thurman, age 81, a resident of Stockbridge, Georgia passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at his residence with his family by his side.Olen was born on Tuesday, December 15, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Frederick Thurman and Ruby Thurman Pattillo. He is preceded in death by step siblings, Arthur Everrit, David Pattillo, Lewis Pattillo, Mae Driver, Myrtice Pattillo, Fred Pattillo, J.W. Pattillo, James Pattillo, and Henry Pattillo and two stepsons, David and Jim Haskins.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thurman; stepbrother, Walter Pattillo and daughter, Linda and stepsister, Evelyn Colliar. Also surviving him are stepchildren, Sandy (Bob) Wallace, Wayne Haskins, Marcia Haskins and step daughter-in-law, Shelly Haskins. Grandchildren, Rob (Courtney) Wallace, Seth (Sherrie) Wallace, Corey Haskins, Nathan (Shellie) Haskins, Briana Ross, Taylor Ross Haskins, Elise Haskins and Jacob Haskins. Great grandchildren, Kaylee Liz Wallace, Bo Wallace, Floyd Haskins, Maclean Olen Haskins, Dorothy Haskins, Landon Wallace and one due at any moment.
When he married Dorothy thirty-seven years ago, she came along with four grown children and their spouses and two very small grandchildren. At his passing he was the very proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren plus the one who was trying to arrive before he left.Olen was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a very quiet, kind man. Even his laugh was quiet but contagious. You would have to be looking at him to see him laughing so hard but no sound coming out. He had a quick wit that would catch us off guard.
Besides his love for his family, he was passionate about The Atlanta Braves, Georgia Tech, Nascar, golf and (old) country music. His knowledge of statistics about these passions was extensive and he assumed you would want to discuss them as much as he did. If eating after church was in the plans, it had to be quick so he could get home to watch Nascar, even though he was videotaping every race, game and CMT program. After his marriage, he came to know Christ as his savior and his life was full and joyful.
A Celebratory Service, honoring his life will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Southern Cremations & Funerals, with burial to follow after the service.
