Billy Dwight Jarrett

February 9, 1949 ~ June 4, 2025

Billy Dwight Jarrett, age 76, passed away on June 4, 2025, at his home in Acworth, GA. He was born in Athens, AL on February 9, 1949. Bill was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, friend, teacher, coach, mentor, and leader. He lived every chapter of his life with wholehearted dedication and quiet strength. From the moment he met Julie, the love of his life, in 1966 during their high school years, Bill committed himself fully to everything and everyone he loved. He believed in doing things the right way – giving his best or not at all. It was a philosophy he carried through college, into his career, and throughout his life. As an educator and coach for over 40 years in Alabama and Georgia, Bill shaped thousands of young lives, teaching driver’s education, health, and biology. He coached a variety of sports, including football, girls’ basketball, tennis, baseball, softball, and cross country. His legacy as a teacher and coach extended far beyond the classroom and the field; he was a mentor and role model, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him. Even after retirement, Bill’s passion for teaching never waned. He shared his love of sports with his grandsons, coaching them in football and baseball. A lifelong athlete and avid golfer, he had just begun teaching his grandson Parker the game, eager to create new memories on the golf course. In 2006, Bill embraced a new adventure: square dancing. What began as a way to meet new people and stay active, quickly grew into a deep commitment. He served as Educational Chair for the 2019 National Square Dance Convention in Atlanta, led the Kennesaw Square Dealers for 11 years, and served as president of the Metro Atlanta Square Dance Association for the past 4 years. Never one to do things halfway, Bill also began learning to be a square dance caller, often practicing with a magnetic board and working on his singing long into the evening. Perhaps one of Bill’s most enduring legacies was his love for creating with his hands. A self-taught carpenter and the family’s Mr. Fix-It, Bill poured his heart into every project, from birdhouses and window boxes to porch swing beds and doll cribs for his granddaughters’ baby dolls – because of course, they needed them. His yard, meticulously maintained, was a testament to his quiet pride and love of hard work. Throughout his life, Bill lived by example: teaching, mentoring, building, fixing, and above all, loving. His impact can be seen not only in the accomplishments of his students and athletes but also in the deep love of his family and the countless lives he touched along the way. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Beatrice Pack Jarrett and John Henry Jarrett of Athens, Alabama. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Julie Mylo Jarrett. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Michael Drew Jarrett (Tara) of Katy, Texas and daughter Melanie Jarrett Roman ( Mike) of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren Madison Drew and Emmalee Grace Jarrett from Lewisburg and Estell Springs, Tennessee, John Parker, Ethan Michael and Anna Kathryn Roman from Marietta, Georgia; great-grandchild Jackson Drew Victory; brother Johnny Dwayne Jarrett; several sister/brother in-laws, and several nieces and nephews. Bill Jarrett’s legacy is one of devotion, kindness, and unwavering dedication. His memory will continue to inspire and guide all who had the privilege of knowing him.

  3. So I have a story about my best buddy’s dad, my drivers Ed teacher….back in the day, the simulators were absolutely horrible and this particular day, we had a simulator test….at the end of the test, he walked up to my side as I sat there and he was grinning, shaking his head and said, “If you just hit the last curb like you did all the rest, you would’ve made a 100″….then he preceded to actually show me how to outsmart the simulator, making it to where I never had anymore bad testing in that simulator…. because he was a football coach, students always had a bit of fear of him, but I got to see his softer/caring side….but THEN HE GOT ME, made me promise not to blow up his house phone so much since Drew and I were “chatty Cathy’s” on the phone while not at school….LMAO

  7. There are far too many memories to share just one, but I can say that square dancing was the subject of most of them. Thank you, Bill, for your friendship and contributions to my favorite hobby. You will definitely be missed. Julie and family, please know my love, condolences, and prayers are coming your way.

  8. While in Cincinnati, Ohio at the National Square Dance Convention we were trying to break the previous Guinness World record for most dancers on the floor. We were required to stay on the floor for a certain amount of time. There was a dancer in my square that couldn’t make it -Billy noticed and stepped up to save the day! We were able to break the Guinness Book of World Records because of Billy’s contribution!

  11. My year as Hotlanta caller scheduler is drawing to a close. I decided to hire every “out of town” caller Bill hired for MASADA on Sunday for Hotlanta on Saturday night. It worked well. He helped me learn. When Tom Miller was unable to call about about 10 days before a dance, I called Bill to tell him the news and we took turns contacting callers who might be able to call until we found one. A task that would have been a terrible panic was actually pretty calm and it only took a few hours. He was a wonderful person to work with. I will miss him greatly.

  12. Coach Jarrett is truly one of my favorite coaches who played a paramount part in my life developing me into who I am today!! Thanks a million Coach J!

  13. Coach Jarrett was a football guru for defensive schemes and had a gift of developing players to become outstanding college players. I will never forget the moment at practice(Davidson high: 87-88)when he challenged me to show him what I was made of lol. It was the play that defined me and elevated me to become an All-American linebacker in college. Thanks Coach Jarrett for the motivation and inspiration you always displayed to all of us!! Rest Well Big Fella!!

  14. With much sadness to the loss of Bill Jarrett.

  18. Lee Ann (Mathews) Williams says:

Coach Jarrett was one of my favorite coaches. He pushed me to grow, challenged me to embrace new positions on the softball field, teaching me to be 110% a team player and develop a diverse set of skills that allowed me to play at the collegiate level. Even though many times we would butt heads on the field; he was always in my corner. He was a support when our family faced a difficult medical diagnosis and when I got into trouble or was less than humble he was quick to correct me. He often spent extra time outside of practice helping me to refine my hitting and helping me to perfect my throw from outfield to home plate. I am thankful for the school seasons and summers spent playing for Coach Jarrett. My prayers are with his family and friends during this time and I pray that they would feel God’s love and comforting presence in an extraordinary way.
