Arthur Thorp

February 13, 1945 ~ July 20, 2025

Arthur “Arty” Thorp, age 80, of Sharpsburg, Georgia, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Birtley, England, on February 13, 1945, Arty later moved to the United States and graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1963. Soon after, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist's Mate (ADJ 3), Petty Officer Third Class. During his service, Arty was a valued member of the Navy’s flight deck crew. His dedication earned him the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his honorable service ending in 1967. On December 28, 1968, Arty married the love of his life, Rose Ann, beginning a lifelong journey filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures. Together, they raised three sons and built a home grounded in love, service, and compassion. He served as an aircraft mechanic with Pan Am and transitioned to Delta Airlines later in his career, from which he eventually retired. He was honored as Delta Employee of the Month in 2000 and received numerous service awards throughout his time with the company. Arty’s life was marked by a deep sense of curiosity and an adventurous spirit. He loved hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, fixing just about anything, and exploring new places. Whether traveling across the country or simply taking a drive to enjoy the scenery, he found joy in the journey. He also gave freely of his time and talents, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a proud member of the Moose Lodge and the NRA. Above all, Arty was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Arty is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Rose Ann Thorp; sons Arthur Thorp, IV, Christopher Thorp, and Brian Thorp; sister Brenda Garcia; mother-in-law Rose Bennett; daughter’s -in-law Allison Thorp and Beth Halfin; granddaughter Erin Thorp; grandsons Logan Thorp, Tristan Follas, and Speros Follas; great-grandsons Leonardo Bennet and Colton Thorp; and many nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Catherine Thorp, and Burt Court. 10. Thinking of you all and wishing I could be there to offer comfort in person. I’ve been remembering Arty and one particular moment that still makes me smile.

He had this dune buggy — I’d never been in one before — and one day we were at West Meadow Beach: Arty was driving, Roseanne riding shotgun, and I was in the back, perched on something (definitely not a seat), holding onto the roll bar for dear life.

Next thing I know, Arty starts tear-assing down the beach. My hair was flying everywhere — I couldn’t see a thing — and suddenly we hit a bump or something and I flew right out the back! Landed hard, got up hobbling, and climbed back in. Arty just looked at me and said, in that dry English accent, “Ya fell out.”

I gave him a look that said “no kidding,” and he just grinned — that signature Arty grin with the twinkle in his eye. In that moment, I knew exactly what Roseanne was in for — a lifetime of unexpected adventures and laughter.

Arty was truly one of a kind. He’ll be deeply missed by all of us who knew and loved him. His humor, kindness, and gentle spirit left a mark on everyone he met.

To Roseanne, and to the whole family — my heart is with you. May your memories bring you comfort, and may you always feel his love around you.

    With love,
    Marlena
