Barbara Van Gelderen Goldman left this life on February 19, 2026 at the age of 98. Shepassed peacefully while in hospice care at home after enduring several months ofdebilitating lung cancer.
Barbara was born on Long Island, New York on January 17, 1928. She spent the majorityof her life as a professional portrait artist and still-life artist from the age of 16 on. In1946, she met the love of her life, Joe Goldman and, in March of 1947, they weremarried. In March of 1948, she gave birth to Carlee, her daughter. In April 1952, she gavebirth to her son, Richard.
Beginning in 1962, Barbara became a professional businesswoman. she held the positionof Executive Vice president of Adways Advertising and Co-owner and Vice president ofVan Go, Inc, an art and design studio. Early in 1978, prior to moving to South Carolina,she sold advertising for Long Island's premier newspaper, Newsday.When she arrived in South Carolina in late 1978, Barbara and her husband startedGoldman-Van Gelderen Studios. Shortly thereafter, she joined the National League ofPen Women. She later became a member and then president of Friends of the Arts of ThePickens County Art Museum, member and Treasurer of the Greenville Artists Guild, anda member of the Metropolitan Arts Council. Later, she became a member of UpstateVisual Arts, and she, ultimately, founded and presided over The Plein Air Artists Society.In 2011, Barbara and Joe retired to Wesley Commons in Greenwood, South Carolina. In2023, a year after Joe's passing, Barbara, at the age of 95, moved to Newnan, Georgia tobe closer to family.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Sydney and Sadie Van Gelderen, herbrother Richard Van Gelderen, her sister, Lorraine Van Gelderen, and her belovedhusband, Joseph Goldman. She is survived by daughter Carlee Paddock and son-in-law,Veetkam Gin, her son, Richard Goldman and daughter-in-law, Mary, hergrandchildren, Tana, Joss, Rebecca, and Kyra, step-grandchildren Hans, Karl, Joe,Lonnie, and Angela, one great grandchild, fourteen step-great-grand children, and sevenstep-great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 1PM on March 21st at the chapel of Southern Cremationsand Funerals at Holly Hill Memorial Park, 431 SW Broad St., Fairburn, GA 30213
