Mr. Leonard L. Chester was born on February 4, 1954, in Columbus, Georgia, to Alberta Chester and Edward L. Chester, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death. A longtime resident of Columbus before moving to Atlanta, Leonard passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 72. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him.
After graduating from Kendrick High School in 1971, Leonard moved to Atlanta to continue his education. In 1976, he earned an associate degree in civil engineering from Southern Technology.
Leonard built a meaningful career as a civil engineer and later as a correction officer, bringing dedication, discipline, and commitment to both roles.
Though deeply devoted to his wife, his love for his children and grandchildren was unwavering.
In his leisure time, Leonard enjoyed coaching and watching football, playing online games, and watching Westerns—pastimes that brought him joy and created lasting memories with those around him.
Leonard was preceded in death by his three siblings, Edward L. Chester, Jr., Bernice Stewart-Terry, and Grover Chester.
Leonard leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Shirley Chester; his sons, Steven Chester and Nicholas Chester; his daughter, Nicole Chester; ten grandchildren, Jamal Chester (Katherine), Derrick Chester, Jasmine Chester, Nicholas Brice Chester, Blake Chester, Jermaine Mcsween, Juwaun Mcsween, Jaden Chester, Sydney Chester, and Savion Chester; three stepsons, Gilbert Stringer, Germaine Stringer (Santerisha), and Gerard Stringer (Kisha); two uncles, Samuel Robinson and William Robinson; one aunt, Lola Robinson Burgess; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
His strength, love, and perseverance will live on through his family and all whose lives he touched.
