What Military Funeral Honors Do Veterans Receive?

Eligible veterans may receive military funeral honors provided by the United States Armed Forces.

At minimum, military honors include:

  • Folding and presentation of the United States flag
  • The playing of “Taps”

The American flag is draped over the casket during the funeral service and is ceremonially folded into a triangle by members of the honor guard at the conclusion of the graveside service. The folded flag is then presented to the next of kin with the words: On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States military, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one faithful and dedicated service. This ceremony is one of the most meaningful moments of a veteran funeral.

Some ceremonies may also include:

  • A ceremonial honor guard
  • Additional military recognition depending on availability

Our team coordinates these honors with the appropriate military representatives so families can focus on remembering their loved one.

Military funeral honors are provided by the Department of Defense for eligible veterans. At minimum, two uniformed military members will fold and present the American flag to the next of kin. Eligible veterans may also receive a rifle salute, the playing of Taps (live or recorded), and a full honor guard. Southern Cremations & Funerals coordinates all military honors directly with the appropriate military branch on behalf of the family.

What Burial Benefits Are Veterans Eligible For?

Some veterans may qualify for burial benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

VA burial benefits may include:

  • Burial in a national or state veterans cemetery
  • A government-issued headstone or grave marker
  • A United States burial flag
  • A Presidential Memorial Certificate

Southern Cremations & Funerals can help families understand these benefits and assist with the process of coordinating them.

What Documents Are Needed for Veteran Funeral Benefits?

Families may be asked to provide documentation to verify eligibility for military honors or burial benefits.

Common documents include:

  • DD-214 or military discharge papers
  • The veteran’s Social Security number
  • Personal information needed for the death certificate

If these documents are difficult to locate, our staff can help guide families through the process.
