Lejay Washington

February 7, 1954 ~ February 29, 2024

Mr. Lejay Washington was born February 7, 1954, in Albany, GA where he grew up and attended school in Dougherty County. Lejay picked up the trade of butcher with his first job at Harvey’s grocery store in Albany. Lejay met and married Cathy Starks in 1974 and moved to Newark, NJ where their family grew with the birth of their daughter Tammie and son Lajay Washington. They remained in NJ until 1990 when Lejay moved back to Albany, then to Carrollton, before finally settling in Newnan, GA for the last 20 plus years. Lejay was well known in Newnan as the “meat man” at a few grocery stores with his final employment being at Hemrick’s Grocery store. His work family and customers enjoyed his conversation, laughter, and friendliness. Lejay’s hobbies included playing cards and “living large” as he always said. After more than a decade of fighting through three cancer diagnoses and going in and out of remission, Lejay took his final rest on Thursday, February 29th. He is preceded in death by his parents Lizzie Mae and Henry Washington and his Brother Perry Washington. Lejay leaves his memories to be cherished by wife, Cathy Washington, daughter, Tammie Washington, and his son Lajay Washington. He also leaves his 5 grandchildren, Dominique, Jaylin, Nicholas (Jenkins) Malik and Maurice Washington and three great grandchildren Dallas Washington, Laiyahni, and Jenesis Jenkins. Sisters Dorothy Lewis and Sonya Snow, brothers Henry Washington Jr, Lawrence Washington, Larry Washington, and Gary (Sharon) Washington. His bonus family, The Jacksons, Rita, Robin, Toya, and Aeisha along with a host of nieces and nephews, in-laws, and friends.
