Rose Marie Kubsch

October 31, 1925 ~ August 1, 2023

The family of Rose M. Kubsch announce her peaceful passing on August 1, 2023, at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Orville Kubsch; parents, Jim and Rose Novy, and siblings; Sylvia Petersen, Alvin Novy, and Irene Larson. She will be remembered by her children: Gloria Baker, Jim Kubsch, and Tim Kubsch; grandchildren: Robin Carter, Tessa Meissner, Brianna Deleske, and Kelly Kubsch; greatgrandchildren: Gabrielle Goodell, Meredith, and Burke Meisner. Rose was born on Halloween in 1925 and grew up during the Depression; where they lived depended on the jobs her father could find. The places she lived and remembered the most were Rockwood and Manitowoc. She was a junior at Lincoln High School when WW2 broke out. She quit school to become a real “Rosie the Riveter” where she earned money on her first job working at Mirror Aluminum Company, a cookware company that transitioned to war materials. She worked at Mirror long enough to buy her own her wedding trousseau because she met a farmer by the name of Orville Kubsch; they married on July 27, 1946. From city girl to farm wife, Rose worked inside and outside. By the time the two old children were grown, and the dairy portion of the farming had ended, Rose was instrumental in finding Orville’s family roots in Czechoslovakia. In 1980 they started traveling back and forth to the Czech Republic even bringing one of the Czech family relatives for a tour of Wisconsin. Between their travels, they joined the Wisconsin Czechs, an organization the promotes and preserves their Czech heritage. Rose, dressed in the traditional Czech costume of a black vest, white blouse, and white lace apron over a red skirt joined The Czech Choroliers, a 35-member group from 4 Wisconsin counties where the choral group would sing folk songs in both Czech and English. Despite knee replacements and a giant hernia operation, Rose could dance the polka and waltz well into her 80’s. She only started to use a walker in her 90s when falling became a problem. A long life well lived. Memorial services will be held in Georgia and Wisconsin. The Georgia service will be held on September 30, 2023, at 2:00 PM, at Macland Presbyterian Church, 3615 Macland Rd, Powder Springs, GA. The memorial service in Wisconsin will be held on October 31, 2023, at Melnik Presbyterian Church at 9:30 am, followed by internment at Knollwood Memorial Gardens in Manitowoc. We are grateful for the wonderful care given by our friend and sitter, Shannon Gosk and Comfort and Debora from Cornerstone Hospice. Their kindness made Rose’s last days manageable and peaceful.

  1. Rose Marie Kubsch was a member of the Wisconsin Czechs, Inc. from 1981 – 2017. This organization celebrates our Czech heritage with four meetings each year, masopust, scholarship, pout’ and Christmas. Rose was active in all celebrations from taking part in Christmas plays, skits, dancing to polka music – always with gusto – always with a love of the Czech spirit.
